Gift for blind person that can not read braille? (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
My grandma is blind. She became blind when she was old and never learned braille. She also can’t get around. She said she is so bored all of the time, just sitting in her chair because she can’t really walk and definitely can’t see. She is also alone a lot of the time. I told her about all the cool apps for blind people, but she has a flip phone and can’t afford a smartphone I guess. I’m trying to think of something to get her for Christmas. An echo dot is one thing, even if not connected to her phone it can still do some helpful things over Wi-Fi. But she misses games. Is there any solo games for blind people that use touch but don’t require you know braille? She loved card games and scrabble, but she’d probably like any game.
Also if there are any helpful tools or devices for blind people, let me know about them so I can look into those too. She is just so bored, I want to gift her something that will entertain her or make her life easier. Thanks in advance for your advice!

She does listen to audiobooks on some old device donated by an organization for blind people nearby. Anything else helpful or fun you can think of?

Maybe you and your family can pitch in for a cheap iPhone or an Alexa?

Seriously, get her on the internet. It's not a game but you can find such like minded people. No matter what you're into there will be someone somewhere who is just as into it as you and someone to talk to. Maybe that's a big job, with a computer or a phone, but it's so worth it.

For what it's worth, it isn't too hard to learn enough braille to make braille cards work. I mean, I have an awful time with braille but that's because I play guitar for a living and I have calluses on my fingertips, but people have said the cards are sort of a gateway drug.

I don't want to be telling you what to do, but is there any way to fix the can't walk issue, even if she just needs lots of help? I mean, I'd be bored, just sitting around all the time. Being blind can be just hideously isolating if you don't know what you're doing with it, but I always say, at least with younger people, that if you are bored you aren't working hard enough to develop all the techniques that you need to not be bored long term. So you should never be bored. I guess if we're talking about someone who is really old and frail it's harder, but I think that still applies as much as it can.

She is 94, overweight, can’t walk without help but my uncle who helps her isn’t around very often and it doesn’t sound like he does much for her, she told me she was completely alone despite him technically being around. I live in a totally different state across the country and just had a baby or I’d go help her and get her set up with some things

Hi. A bookshare account. She wouldn’t need to buy the books you would just be able to download them. Has she had any though about learning the alphabet and numbers in Braille? If so that would open up a whole variety of things for her to do like playing cards.

That's very nice of you to try and help out. There's tactile domino's that she can play. They have large bumps for the dots so she may be able to tell what they are. If you're able to play with her, there's also tactile tic tac to.

OrCam MyEye - I work at OrCam and it's an amazing product that can read any typed text (so this means she can go to the library and pull out any book to read, or even go out to eat and read the menu). I'll include a link below if you're interested in learning more, as there is an incredible black friday discount happening now.
