JAWS to NVDA (self.Blind)
submitted by RunsOnBoltCoffee
Longtime JAWS user here currently learning NVDA. Could anyone please tell me how to gain focus on the top/bottom of a webpage? Documentation and behavior in file explorer suggest the keyboard shortcuts are the same as JAWS, but my cursor doesn’t move when I try a control + home/end inside a web browser. Visual screen focus moves but my curser remains rooted.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can offer some help or advice. Thank you.

Can confirm, ctrl-home and ctrl-end work here to move to top and bottom of webpage.

Thanks!

Only reason I can think of those not working is if you're in browse mode, what JAWS would call forms mode. anything else should just work with the same hotkeys. Do things like h and shift+h for moving between headings work?

Yes. Everything else seems to work fine. I didn’t realize how heavily reliant I was on this particular shortcut until it lost it’s functionality. I’m going to be instructing some sighted devs on how to properly test with a screen reader and company is going with NVDA because it’s open source. I think it’s important to reinforce the concept of testing from the top left of the page in question. I’m going to go try on my other computer and report back. Thank you for the reply.

pretty sure ctrl+home works for me usually.
I have screen layout off in NVDA preferences, settings, brows mode.
Can check further when I'm actually at a computer.

Thank you for the reply. I would very much appreciate it. I toggled screen layout and there was no change.

As an update, still experiencing this issue. Did a fresh install on my personal system and having the same issue. 😩

what browser?
Does home and end work for start and end of line?
RunsOnBoltCoffee [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Chrome, but also happening in all browsers. I should mention that I don’t have dedicated home/end keys on my full size laptop keyboard. I do have a numpad.
When I press 7 or 1 on the numpad, it throws me to previous line and previous character.
I’m guessing this is my problem.

you're not pressing home or end, then? what does keyboard help - NVDA+1 - give you? You'll need to use, or re-map, home/end to use them properly.

Home and end are alternate functions of the 7 and 1 on the number pad.

JAWS help says:
Control + Home: moves to beginning of file.
Control + end: moves to end of file.
In NVDA help:
Control + numpad 7.
Control + numpad 1.
NVDA doesn’t give any additional information about this command.

If anyone was wondering: I just grabbed an external keyboard with dedicated home/end keys. Works but still a pain that JAWS can do this but NVDA can’t on the same hardware.

Do you have a function key? What about alt function home or end? It's fiddly but that might work?

No dice but appreciate the suggestion.

edit: added some words.

No problem. How strange, I really thought that would work.
