Future Job issues? (self.Blind)
submitted by cyhalex
Hello!

I am curious on if there is anyone here who knows about or knows someone who is knowledgeable in the requirements to join the CIA.

I’m legally blind due to a suspected stroke when I was 12. Have been trying to get to the bottom of this for a while now but my parents are unmotivated and I am currently dealing with other health issues. I can see only out of my right eye, however cannot look left voluntarily, and cannot see above me (I’m fairly short so this can be an issue). I’m working on applying for disability since I cannot drive and my vision impairs my everyday life.

I’m almost done with getting my AA in Criminal Justice. I’ll have it hopefully by this summer. I would like to work for the CIA after getting my bachelors, since there is great benefits, insurance, and pension. I could work for 30 years, retire and focus on my art.

From what I’ve researched on my own, the sites and sources I’ve found never explicitly stated that people who are disabled cannot work for the CIA. Some of their jobs list that you must be able to drive, but some don’t.

Does anyone know if someone with visual impairments can work for the CIA, and if so, is this a good idea? Hopefully by the time I’m 18-19 I have my bachelors if all goes well and can start working.

Hi, yes according to my friend there are jobs for the blind community in the CIA. If you want I can send you a PM and that we can give you some more information about the types of jobs they may have, he was very interested in this type of work as well so he might have some more information

Thank you! That would be great. Like I said I’m planning on finishing my AA in Criminal Justice hopefully summertime and noticed that was a degree typically used in the CIA.

I’m Canadian, so I cannot speak to specific requirements for the CIA. But I know our Canadian equivalent, CSIS is open to hiring people with disabilities (had a lovely chat with a CSIS recruiter at a job fair once). However, certain jobs, like being an actual agent, require enough sight to drive. Which makes sense, as a blind spy isn’t really going to be able to successfully stake out a place and watch who is coming and going, or things like that. But there are plenty of other jobs someone with low vision can do in agencies like that.

Of course, given I don’t know much about the CIA specifically, it could be something where they just require everyone who works there to have a driver’s license for some inexplicable reason. Hopefully one of the Statesian members has more information for you.

Most government jobs are EOE which is a benefit to disabled or impaired people. You will be great in the CIA and just be ready to tell them everything without sweating a pinch.

I don’t know about the cia specifically but most federal jobs should be open to people with disabilities (unless you want to be an agent or something). I imagine they employ analysts and other desk type jobs. In your shoes I might look around their website and see if there is an HR or PR person you can talk to about your questions.
