Annual Blind Accessible Cooking Equipment Recommendation Thread (self.Blind)
submitted by bondolo
Every year around this time there seem to be a lot of questions about accessible cooking equipment. Well, let's make it official! This thread is for recommendations, brief reviews and questions about tools for making cooking and baking more accessible.

Post your favourite tools, hacks, adaptations, gripes, and questions. It is OK to post Amazon or other merchant links.

I've really upped my coffee game this past year, and here are some of the accessible tools I use each day:
Baratza Encore burr grinder - has a pulse tactile button on the front, a switch on the side for continuous grinding, and the grind size adjustment is based on clicks by turning the bean hopper.

Reflex 5 or 15kg kitchen scale - waterproof, low-profile, and works great using the accessible Smart Chef Baking Scale app. The scale itself has a touch surface to change units, power on/off, and tare, but tactile dots work great with it and it pairs simply by turning it on and then opening the app on your phone.

AeroPress - Cheap, unbreakable, versatile, and fun to use to make coffee! Basically a big syringe with paper or metal filters at the bottom; does immersion brewing with the coffee then you press the coffee through the filter with a plunger directly into your mug. Easy to clean and use, no electronics.

HadinNeon electric kettle - tactile temperature control buttons that range from 165 - 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Great for Tea, coffee, or any other use where you need a specific water temperature. The keep warm function keeps water at the set temp for 20 minutes.

Dash egg cooker - makes up to 7 hard or soft boiled eggs at once just by adding a set amount of water to the hot plate on the device, putting eggs into a holder and putting it on the hot plate, covering it with the top and hitting one tactile button. Also comes with two additional plastic pans to put on top of the egg holder; one makes a 2-egg omelette, the other makes perfectly poached eggs. The water measuring tool has tactile markings inside so you can feel where the water level is supposed to be, plus the bottom part of the cup comes off to reveal a spike that you use to put little holes in the tops of the eggs before steaming. Once they are done, you just press the button to turn off the Dash and it has a fun little tune it plays when it's ready.

Your coffee sophistication makes me feel inadequate.

Haha, aww. Well I've always loved coffee and decided to make that my focus during the pandemic. I also just got a Comandante C40 Mk4 hand grinder and it's absolutely brilliant and worth the price. I created the Blind Barista club on clubhouse just so I could teach others about coffee and listen to how others made theirs, some fun skill sharing. :)

Meater Thermometer might help some people! Its a smartphone controlled Thermometer for food and I'd assume it would be compatible with screen readers. Making it easier to tell when meat is done, and other stuff 🙂

+1 to a meat thermometer. Leave the oven, go for a read in the garden, perfect output every time.
Bsmith0799 3 points 1y ago
The meater ones connect to an app on your phone so they're especially nice for low vision as your phone can read the stuff for you
WorldlyLingonberry40 1 points 1y ago
Do you leave the thermometor inside the oven? Or is it something that you have to poke the meat to check the tempreture?
Bsmith0799 1 points 1y ago
I think you leave it in

I'll start off with the item which inspired this post, the egg separator that my wife, /u/accessaces, prefers and recommends: $1

It is nice and cheap but is reliable and easy to use. It works better with fresh eggs and you should always separate eggs one at a time into a small bowl and then transfer the whites to the larger bowl to avoid any chance of yolk contamination, or worse, a bad egg spoiling the whole batch.
Marconius 9 points 1y ago
I find that egg seperators never do anywhere near as good a job as just cracking the egg into your palm and letting the whites filter through your fingers. Can easily feel the yolk and can tell if it's broken or not, and then you just wash your hands afterwards!

Not marketed as accessible but I love my $1. The ability to have them be whatever color I want, the magnetic storage so I know for sure what I have clean based on what slots are full (each one can fit only one, so no chance of grabbing one pan and getting another), and nothing gets stuck on it. NOTHING! I’ve done brown sugar glaze and it all came off.

I’ve had mine for over a year now, they are pricey, and heavy, but if you need them they are awesome.

I'm totally blind and am searching for an air fryer that is large as there are four of us counting the kids here. I also want one that does not have a freaking touch screen! Why is this not a thing?

We do have one with a touch screen but even though I had somebody help me put dots on some of the buttons, the touch screen is so sensitive that you can't feel around for a dot without hitting random buttons. It's really annoying.

Can anybody chime in with some suggestions? Thanks.

Cuisinart makes an air-fryer/toaster-oven with 4 analog knobs. Model TOA-60. It has an MSRP of $225 but have seen it online for $160-$170

If you find one please tell me. May touch screens fall into the volcano at the end of lord of the rings!
Vicorin 1 points 1y ago
I have one with actual buttons, I’ll have to wait til I get home to tell you the brand.
WorldlyLingonberry40 2 points 1y ago
Cool, buttons!
Badassmotherfuckerer 1 points 1y ago
Yo did you ever find out what the name of the air fryer with actual buttons on it was?

A great purchase is... Heat proof gloves (BBQ gloves usually).
They are better than mitts for using the oven BUT you can use them for flipping too. Make sure you keep them clean, but I will just flip my chicken or steak with my hands wearing these babies!
bondolo [OP] 2 points 1y ago
When I first got silicone oven mitts I discovered a lot of tasks that I had previously done with tongs I would now do just directly with a mitt, grabbing boiled corn on the cob out of the pot for example.

As someone who has been blind since birth and has regularly used a stick burner, I have really enjoyed using a pellet smoker for the last six months or so. Really, any smoker with an accessible app works. I have been using the Weber SmokeFire.

Man you have me thinking BBQ right now. I'm trying to diet.

I'm in search for a set of knifes. My favorite knife went dull and it kind of sucks now. I've had it sharpened, but it's just not enough.
Outrageousirish 1 points 1y ago
My favorite knife is a Bob Kramer carbon steel 8 inch. Great feel and the edge can be brought back to sharp with a quick hone every once in awhile. The draw backs are it’s carbon steel so no dishwasher and dry it off before you put it away. And it is rather expensive. But it’s the kind of knife that you can keep for a lifetime.
WorldlyLingonberry40 1 points 1y ago
Does it come with a protective shield?
Outrageousirish 1 points 1y ago
No. But it does come in a very nice box that is somewhat durable with a cut out that fits the knife perfectly, but it is cardboard. I keep the bottom of the box in my knife drawer and just place it back in the cutout.

Does anybody have a good electric kettle recommendation? I drink tea every single day and I would like to get one for myself so I don’t have to keep using the one we have upstairs. It’s almost broken.
