Does anyone struggle with the color white? (self.Blind)
submitted by howwedo420
For a little background I was born premature therefore I've struggled with vision problems my whole life. My parents didn't know I was visually impaired until I was 3 years old. I have worn glasses my whole life. This past year I've noticed that my vision was getting a little worse and and decided to go schedule a appointment in July to get my eyes tested. From that appointment I learned that I was legally blind with corrective lenses. They've made me a new pair and I pick them up on the 29th of Nov.(it's the strongest pair they have ever had to make at that location and i goto a specialist for low vision in Roundrock Tx.) Since waiting for my glasses have noticed my vision has been declining at a steady pace.

This past week I've had to quit my job at TTEC my vision was affecting my productivity. They also wasn't allowing access to some of my visual aids and they wouldn't allow me to have time off to go to my appointment. (I have whole lot I can say but just going to let it go)

Now getting to my question I just wanted to know people with low vision you all struggle with anything that has a white surface? I feel like the white washes everything out can't see it. It's like my eyes can't see anything but the white. From reading to cooking everything in-between it's a real struggle. Like I know about the high contrast settings I got everything set in that electronics wise computers phone ps5. But things like my dog she's white looking into the refrigerator can't see anything cooking on the stove with the white Pan can't see anything, stores like Walmart or shopping. Sometimes I just wish there was a switch in my head the that turn the world into high contrast.

Glare caused by bright backgrounds coupled with dimming vision was one of the symptoms that I experience after my optic nerve started getting damaged by glaucoma. It felt like the signal was being clamped at a certain brightness level and everything brighter would have a distorted washed out color thus causing contrast issues. In the beginning I just lowered the brightness, but after some point the threshold became so low that lowering the brightness became a problem itself since things would be to dark for me to see, so I started inverting colors and stuck with that until my vision deteriorated to the point that I could not read anymore.

If you use iOS devices, you can reduce the intensity of white: Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce White Point.

Howdy from down the road in San Antonio!

I have trouble with brightness washing out darker colors too, but probably not as much as you describe. One thing I've found that helps is prescription sunglasses. If you still have the prescription from your eye doctor you can order sunglasses online. I went with Zenni but there are different brands out there. The cost was about $55.

They're not a cure all. I still have some trouble with the contrast of light and dark but the sunglasses make it easier. They also seem to stop the headaches.

Yes I forgot to mention that with my glasses I'm getting a prescription Sunglasses to go with them there's their special tinted. I'm getting one pair of Regular glasses one pair of glasses with a monocular. And the handheld monocular for seeing far distances. This the state has given me a zoom Max 12 which I really enjoy and it's pretty light for size. And I also have a topaz I haven't yet got to try out a plan on doing it sometime after the holidaysAnd I got some software to try out called zoom texts

I was born premature and my parents not realizing I was visually impaired for a while either. Do they usually think the reason is something didn't develop fully or is it usually that they used oxygen when someone premature is visually impaired?
