Guide Dogs and Zebra Crossings (self.Blind)
submitted by Aggressive-Tie-297
I dont know if this is the right place for this but Ive been seeing some controversy recently about zebra crossings or just crossings in general being repainted in rainbow stripes as support for LGBTQ+. People have complained its unsafe and would confuse guide dogs, is this true??

If you know of a better place to post this please comment, thanks!

The statements about confusion are regarding people that are low vision, not the guide dogs. People who are low vision use the black and white contrast of the lines to see where to cross and stay in the designated walk area. Since lgbt colors are brighter and more "cluttered" than simple black and white, the VI person's eyes may not pick up on it and they may not be able to see the safe cross walk area.

I see i wasnt sure if it was genuinely unsafe or people were just unhappy about the change. Is it not better if the colours are brighter on the crossig compared to the road?

Think about stuff like the original Addams Family show. Looking at it, you'd never guess that the walls were pink or whatever, right? That's because you're only seeing the contrast, not the actual colors. A bright color can actually be harder to see on black because it isn't giving enough contrast. Yellow and white are generally the colors that work, and stuff like blue and red don't, at all.

This is the right answer. Color contrast and even color blindness can impair people's ability to properly see surroundings.

Aren't dogs colorblind?

Regardless, dogs are very adaptable. I think they'd be fine.

They can see blues and a shade of green. It’s red that dogs are colorblind to.

dogs don’t use the lines to cross the street. I don’t know if they can see them.

Of course they do! My dog knows how to find the zebra crossing and knows to stay on it when crossing the street. I imagine them being colored to make it much more difficult for him. I am colourblind and as soon as something is red or pink, I can't see it on black. Dogs are red-green colourblind, too.

I was told by a instructor that they didn’t use the lines. This was 15 years ago, so I might be miss remembering.

I'm from Europe so it is absolutely possible that Americans train their dogs differently. After all the traffic system is a little different to ours. The dogs I've trained and owned could even follow those bumpy lines on the floor.

Could be. It could be also could be I just don’t understand vision. I don’t have any memory of being able to see, so concepts like color don’t make much sense to me.
