Studies show that those who are blind, both by birth and later in life, use hand gestures when they speak. Do you use hand gestures? Why or why not?(nature.com)

I don't but that's rather due to a not so supportive upbringing (being shamed for any sort of movement or appearance that might look weird). I'd like to try and gesture more in order to look more vivid and natural, but I'm pretty insecure how much of it is normal in which situations, depending on mood, gender, cultural background etc. If anyhone knows some good sources to learn about that, I'd be happy. :)

I made a podcast about learning to gesture that might be useful. The episode is called Noodle Arms No More and is here: https://radiotopiapresents.fm/blind-guy-travels Hope it helps.

As a totally blind guy who has been blind since an early age, I generally don’t. I might move my hands occationally when making a point, but I don’t have any visual reference to what hand gestures are.

Usually not. I’m not sure why, but I find them very annoying.

No, I never have. No particular reason one way or the other - it's not a conscious decision. I just don't do it.

I didn't think I did but my wife just said "Yeah you do."
So I guess I do, subconsciously.

Yes, but I'm Italian, so hand gestures are just instinctive. I've knocked over my fair share of glassware at tables when in an active conversation both when I had vision and still do now after having lost it all.

I don't use hand jestures. I've been blind since birth and as far as I know never have. They don't seem natural to me. I've never figured out a smart phone as touch screens just don't seem intuitive to me. I need buttons and keys.

Interesting. The studies also showed those who are blind speak with gestures to others who are also blind, which is interesting. It seems to be embedded in our language center.

I use hand gestures and facial expressions way to flamboyantly!
I went blind at around age 17/18 so I had quite a few years of vision. I was very flamboyant and expressive as a kid, but became very shy as a teenager. I got my spark back and now I love using my hands to talk since it is hard for me to move a lot of the time. I am also very facial expressive since I cannot move my neck. There’s a lot of stuff going on so it just makes communicating a little more fun and exciting :-)
It also seems to amuse everyone I meet, plus onefor Charme and Karisma
