Rant - not being able to drive (self.Blind)
submitted by choirlass
I’ve missed my Covid booster jab because my taxi didn’t come due to bad weather. I can understand reasons drivers weren’t working but know if I could drive I would have gone for something that important (there were other people driving). I hate being partially sighted.

This is the one that REALLY frustrates me. I am so tired of getting relatives to take me places and also just not having the freedom to drive wherever whenever. I guess uber would be a little closer to independence, but then of course you're paying a lot of money out for short drives.

I would say this is way above any the annoyance for me. And it's a big reason why I don't meet people. I am also shy at first, but even if I wasn't.... I can't get many places where I'd even meet anyone at. I'm sure if I were driving, I'd figure out somewhere.

I hear you. Sometimes I get really frustrated and then depressed when I want to go somewhere and have to wait for days to go because no one in my family can take me. We live rurally so no taxi or Uber. I really miss being able to just jump into the car and go, by MYSELF.

Growing up in place that was car dependent, was on reason I moved to some place that is walkable and has public transportation.

The firm are reliable generally. I’ve never been able to see to drive, but with my other disability would make a big difference. Trying to decide whether to go try to work tomorrow or see I can wfh.

I absolutely hate not being able to drive, it was one of my passions in life. A road trip was just wonderful. Drove big rig for a bit. M/45
Miss it terribly

I lost my sight as a teen and the thing that frustrates me the most a lot of the time is not being able to drive. Hurry up self driving cars!

Btw, speaking of driving... it's interesting that when someone can barely get their vision up good enough to drive, they are then supposed to not drive at night, but I would be able to see better at night because of all of the lights...

Really? I am sighted and I still can’t drive at night. The lights just look blurry.

Yes. Cabs that don't turn up are horrible. I am lucky in that my local cab company knows me and generally makes sure I don't get messed about, but in nearby big city it's a bit of a crapshoot. I had six months of driving and, yeah.

Not being able to drive is the single most limiting aspect of being blind. I can’t take such and such job because the bus doesn’t go there. I can’t see so and so doctor because my parents are too busy to drive me. I can’t do anything spontaneous because paratransit requires me to book 24 hours in advance.

I’m a grown man who still has to ask my parents to take me places. Even if they’re accommodating I still have to live around their schedules.

I am sighted but I definitely have some vision issues. On paper I should be able to drive but I just don't feel comfortable because I am going blind in one eye and I have no depth perception. It sucks it really sucks! We have city buses here but they aren't great because it takes forever to go anywhere. Want to go to the gym there 3 miles away? Great!! It will take 45 minutes if you're lucky! I'd take and Uber but it's too expensive. I thought we'd have self driving cars by now but that night not be possible for another 30 years.

I genuinely hope that laws will change as self driving cars improve. It might be decades in the future, but the tech is arriving now.

The solution it would seem, would to add car service as a benefit of employment. Especially if the employee in question is sight impaired. Use it as a company car.
