What reasonable adjustments can I request for a group interview? (self.Blind)
submitted by Raining-extinction
Interviews can be stressful at the best of times but group interviews complicate things so much more. I have a group interview for a postgraduate course. Some of the things I’m thinking about is the fact I need my back to any windows as the light really hurts my eyes. I would also need any worksheets in large print and any pictures or videos described to me. I would probably need extra time for reading and writing which makes me nervous for group tasks in case I seem really slow and uninvolved. I’m also worried about the fact I won’t be able to see any of the other candidates or know any of their names to address them as I won’t even recognise them by voice. I find group situations like this stressful as I can’t pick up on non verbal cues and sometimes I will interrupt or talk at inappropriate times as I can’t see when other people are getting ready to speak or if they’re not finished speaking yet. This either leaves me seeming rude for interrupting or I end up not saying enough as I’m overly cautious. How do I go about bringing up reasonable adjustments without seeming completely incapable? And does anyone have any suggestions of what adjustments I could ask for that wouldn’t seem unreasonable and would make the process slightly easier for me. At the moment I don’t think I have any chance of passing.

I used to work at a university, and we had to interview a lot of folks.

I don't know if your school has one, but we had an 'Accessibility Coordinator' who was in the Student Development office...the office dealt with all kinds of accessibility issues for students or others using the university. At the uni I worked at, this person would be the one to go to in your situation.

I see from your response to another person that you're going into counseling. My father was the director of the counseling center at the university, and President of the state-wide licensed professional counselors association for a number of years. I grew up hanging out in his office, seeing the counseling interns working and learning.

I have no idea what other programs are like, but in this case you could not ask for a more supportive, accepting, understanding, and deeply familial environment. There were people of every sort of physicality, orientation, nationality, history, etc. I hope you have success.

Is the interview in person?

Hi, do you use screen reader technology? Which platform is the interview going to be held in?

If you don’t mind me asking, what program is this for? In a lot of academic settings, it is fine to disclose a disability, so maybe try to listen for pauses in a conversation but apologize if you cut someone off. Whatever the case, try to be confident. Good luck!

It’s for a PgCert in Counselling as I’m hoping to progress onto a masters course in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to train as a CBT therapist 😌 I’m just cautious about disclosing too much during the interview process as I had a lot of issues during my undergrad degree. And this is the only uni nearby who does this postgrad course so I have one shot! Thank you 😊
