I wish to buy her a kalimba or a harmonica (self.Blind)
submitted by PickFairy
Hello there, I'm someone who supports those who are blind and visually impaired. Recently I worked with a young girl in middle school that's visually impaired. She uses her walking stick and can't read- she's nervous during choir but she has musical talent. When I asked her if she'd ever want an instrument what would she play? She said a piano.. and I thought of the kalimba. It's a small instrument that has metal like keys you can play at your finger tips. It's something that she can fiddle with and it's more travel size friendly.

Here is a youtube link with a popular song with the instrument

Is this a gift she would enjoy?

Because my second option was a harmonica

Harmonicas were in my family as a child and it's something that you can play at your lips easily. You cover the other holes as you blow in or you can vibrate at the side with your other hand to make it echo sorta. I'm from Tennessee and getting something like this may make her giggle. But, it may make her disappointed because it's no where near like a piano... And yet I feel like that instrument would be a good gift too.

Here is the same song above but with a harmonica

Please help me decide. I would like to help this girl have her first instrument for christmas

Why not a small keyboard if you want something more portable?

Hey everyone- thank you for your replies thus far. The small keyboard was good suggestion but she'd had a few of those already. The kalima looks to be the winner. As Worldy pointed out, the harmonica might need more instruction

Based on your description, the first one seems closer to what she wants. I second the question of why not a small keyboard, though?

The first one sounds great. The harmonica may need more musical instruction before she can make music with it.
