My good friend (30M) is going blind in one or possibly both eyes, how can I help him if his vision goes? (self.Blind)

At most I can help with the emotional aspects but any tips??

Just keep including him in things. Offer to pick him up if he needs it. The isolation is horrible (I'm 30M and going blind, so I only drive when conditions are perfect).

He'll probably want space now (assuming he was recently diagnosed) as well as when things get worse (for me I'll have periods of stability and then my vision deteriorates), but don't let him isolate for too long..it's a great recipe to fall into depression.

Thanks for the tip! He's been feeling extremely down recently so it's been a challenge.

The hardest part is not knowing what you need, so you can't really ask for help. Therapy and a support group could probably help with that (I'd assume, since I haven't been handling things very well). I'd say you could suggest either/both of those things to him.

The therapy we are trying to get him to accept or try, and being there for him. The big thing is making the transition.

It will be important at some point that he puts things together like clothes he won’t need to worry about matching, making things easy to get to, no moving furniture (omg my dad would lose his shit when my mom wanted to rearrange…). And I fully agree with bananableoffense, careful he doesn’t slowly fade away, keep him involved the best you can

My folks moved furniture around all the time. When someone asked my dad he said after I ran into it a time or two, I learned where it was.

Hi, I hope at least it’s only one eye. I am blind in one eye, have been for 13 years (I’m 42M). I have adjusted, my life is actually better than back then (not better because of it , better in spite of it). I practice yoga daily, drive, and make my living as a web designer and developer. The difference between blind in one eye and blind in both is of course huge. Being blind in one eye doesn’t feel like “halfway” but it’s still had its challenges for me. All this is to say, I can speak from the one eyed perspective, and I hope that’s the path your friend ends up on!

This question gets asked quite often. $1 a good example from a couple weeks ago. You'll find a bunch of wisdom just scrolling through r/Blind and seeing how we've answered other people who've asked the same question.

Thank you for wanting to help. I know it's awkward. If you have a more specific question we're here to share what we've learned. Hit us up any time - we've been through the stuff your friend is experiencing.

That's very kind, thank you for the tip. It's going to be a long road ahead.

I'm 32M and lost much of my vision last year. I've been blind in one eye since I was a child, though, and it never bothered me all that much (though I've never been able to drive because my other eye wasn't great either). Losing much of my vision in my "good" eye was remarkably hard and I will second what someone said earlier about keeping him included in things and especially offering him rides. Feeling isolated, being forgotten and accidentally getting left out of things is very hard, especially hard if you're used to being useful. People usually don't mean to be thoughtless, they just don't know what we need, and sometimes we feel bad to ask.
