Looking for a talking clock/watch with a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack as a gift for mother - does one exist? (self.Blind)
submitted by boltbrah
A bit of a weird request, but my mother would really like to have a talking clock or watch with a headphone jack if one is on the market. She already has a few talking clocks without a jack, but the problem is if she checks the time in the middle of the night or morning she wakes my dad up, so she would like to keep one on her nightstand with headphones plugged in at all times.

I have been able to help her find and introduce her to some great technology over the years - pen friend, jaws, Siri to name a few, but I haven't been able to find this and feel like it's so simple it has to exist. I realize the 3.5 mm jack is not as common anymore but if anyone knows of anything I would greatly appreciate it! Cheaper is better but if I need to spend more to get something that's going to help her every day that's perfectly fine. Thank you!

Edit: Special thank you to r/curlgurl456 for the perfect suggestion, a calculator with a time feature on maxi aids. I do appreciate all of the comments however with my mother being older and really wanting to just push one button this is great. Thanks again everyone.

What about a Braille watch?
boltbrah [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I wasn't familiar with this actually, thank you. She doesn't regularly use braille but she could do this. Not as easy as pushing a button but it's something. Thanks!

There's no braille on it, just tactile markings for each hour.

Got it, thank you!

Okay, so this is sort of weird, but I found this:

https://www.maxiaids.com/10-digit-talking-calculator-earphone-talking-alarm

I’ve never used it, so I can’t speak to it’s accuracy, but it looks like this talking calculator tells the time and has a headphone jack.

Oh my gosh thank you! Not weird at all, this is actually perfect! I'm familiar with this site as I bought the pen friend and sticky dots for my mom through here in the past. I actually think I scrolled right past this calculator yesterday in my search not realizing it had a time feature.

This is at the price point I was hoping for and is exactly the level of tech simplicity for her use. Can easily throw a sticky button on the time button and it'll be perfect for her.

Going to order it now. Again, thank you so much! Small things like this make my mom so happy, she will love it.

You are so welcome! Glad I could help out you and your mom! I was going to suggest a bump dot on the time button. Fingers crossed it works out! Happiest of holidays to you (:

Bump dot, that's the term I was looking for! I'm sure it'll be perfect, will try to remember to update you once she gets it.

Have a look at the Bradley Eone watch. It’s similar to a Braille watch but you feel the position of the ball bearings on the face to denote the watch hand positions

I wear this regularly and love it, but there's no sound aspect as OP asked

Tactile watch or clock.
CloudyBeep 2 points 1y ago
What about a watch that uses vibrations to indicate the time?

Check out the Blind Shell 2 phone. Totally accessible.

You might want to look at a braille clock.

any old Amazon Echo device, including the Flex (cheapest), has a headphone jack. It has whisper mode for responses, or if that's too loud something like a sleep pillow might be useful?

do we allow conspiracy theories to trump solid advice on this sub, now?
you can argue using any form of social media, including some well-known instant messenger brands, has a similar impact.

I'm not denying the devices come with risk. Any well-informed adult can see that buying something with a whole bunch of microphones inside it is going to have impact. Apologies, labeling it a conspiracy theory was harsh - but I do think we have to be proportionate in our responses. These things improve accessibility for thousands of people all over the world: so there's always a balance to be struck.

You can unplug them... as opposed to Reddit selling the information of what subreddit you view to Facebook's massive ad algorithm that knows not only where you are, but who you're around, and also every website you visit.

Be less paranoid about devices you can unplug and that have been tested to show they only start recording after their wake word, be more paranoid about everything else.

Thank you for the suggestion. She actually already tries to cover the speaker on her clock but my dad is an incredibly light sleeper. And for her phone she relies on Siri so unfortunately that also doesn't work.

Apple devices has a screen reader called Voiceover. Try to see if she could learn how to use it. The best part is it does not hinder Siri a lot so she could keep using it while learning Voiceover. Once she learns it checking the time is extremely easy and she'll be able to use the phone just like anyone else.

Actually it does.

You can ask siri, what’s the time, and it’ll tell you.
boltbrah [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Right, she does that during the day. But I'm asking for this because her speaking in the morning and asking Siri for the time wakes my dad up.

Doesn’t she have headphones and a headphone jack?
pitermach 0 points 1y ago
Iirc, Caretec made one called zeitgeist, see if you can buy one still. Also, it should be possible to add a headphone Jack to a clock without one if you know someone good with electronics and soldering.

Wow this looks like it does fit the bill but appears to be out of production. Will keep searching, thanks!
