Strategy games (self.Blind)
submitted by NoClops
My husband and I have been trying to find activities to do together, and we’ve recently tried getting into tabletop games. He LOVES strategy and logic games and grew up playing video games that had a strong strategic component. In other words, he’s not all about the blow em up aspect. I, on the other hand, grew up with a lot of word puzzles/logic, but I don’t think I have a lot of experience with strategic thinking.

We play a game called Hive. It’s similar to chess in that each piece has a set way of movement, and the goal of the game is to surround your opponent’s queen bee piece (hexagonal shaped tiles). I’m getting really discouraged because I don’t feel I am grasping the strategy component. I keep trying to say it’s because I have trouble seeing the big picture and long-term affects of each move due to not being able to just look at the “board”. I have to try to memorize what’s been used, where pieces are, and/or take forever to tactilely review the pieces in play. The active board can get big, and I find it difficult to pay attention to pieces near the area I’m trying to play while keeping in mind that pieces on the opposite end of the board are important.

I recently introduced the game to a friend, and We played two rounds. I had thought I would possibly have a hand up having been familiar with the game, but I still lost both rounds. She is probably closer to my level of strategic thinking, which also made me feel bummed/like I can’t get the hang of the game.

All this to say, I can’t really tell if my blindness affects my ability to learn strategy or if I’m just not a strategic thinker. I wanted other’s experiences and thoughts.

I'm developing a little web based multiplayer game that should be completely accessible. It's currently fully playable, but I will be adding some more features in the near future.

It's based on the game Canoga, which is a traditional luck based pub game.

The game board is a set of tiles numbered 1 through 9. A round of the game consists of each player repeatedly throwing the dice until they cannot continue. With each dice through, you select any number of tiles that sum to be the rolled amount, and those tiles are taken out of the game.

You can find the game $1. Should be very easy to play, the website does most of the work for you. Anyone could get the hang of it after a round or two.

Always looking for feedback if you happen to try it out :)

This is a really interesting question. I have no idea what the answer is, but you and your significant other sound a lot like my husband and I. He is better at strategy than I am (even before my vision issues), but I have more trouble now than I used to. I wonder if you’d like games that involve you having your own pieces and play area better, rather than a communal play area? I’ve never played Hive, but my understanding is that you and your opponent share the play area. A game like Roll Through the Ages or something similar with your own play area may work better for you two. Or depending on your vision and patience for modifying games, maybe something like Stone Age, which has a common play area, but with a bit less going on that you have to keep in your head. Deck builder games may work for you as well. There are lots of types of strategy games, not all involve keeping geometry in your head. Lol, I suck at those now! But that may just be me.

Edit: look up worker placement, resource management, or deck builders for strategy game ideas. I used to love area control games, but I struggle with them now.

Many sighted people can play chess while blindfolded. I can do it for like 10 or so moves until I lose track of the pieces. It's really just a skill you pick up by practice. There's videos out there of the world champion playing chess against 3 different people at the same time while blindfolded.

I'd imagine a similar thing would happen with the game you mentioned. The more you play, the better you'll get at holding everything in memory.

I don’t have any suggestions for games available to buy, but this post reminded me of a video Lucy Edwards (a blind YouTuber) posted recently, her fiancé designed a tactile version of The Royal Game Of Ur out of Lego! https://youtube.com/shorts/8jX6RvOw_mE?feature=share

Edit: the video isn’t audio described sorry, but the rest of her content is usually more accessible. Also, I just saw that there’s a link to the design if anyone wants to make it! https://www.bricklink.com/v3/studio/design.page?idModel=271383

Have you got Markers to distinguish between different coloured pieces, and some sort of non stick material on the bottom of them so you can touch them more easily without knocking them everywhere
