Screenshots and images (self.Blind)
submitted by tylandlannister
Hi community. I hope I'm posting in the right place.

So I just started a new job in customer service. I'm completely blind, and use NVDA on Windows. Because of the nature of my job, I often have to read screenshots from customers, and create screenshots for them when showing them how to do something on our platform.

So my question is two fold:

What is the best way of taking screenshots on pc? I'm thinking along the lines of it allows you to select what you want captured, and the selection is obviously done via arrows.

Secondly, is there software (preferrably free) that describes images? I'm thinking of something like Seeing AI $1 which is currently only for mobile? I'm not a big fan of Google Image descriptions, as they don't always work, and when they do, their descriptions are not detailed.

I could always send screenshots to my phone to be read by Seeing AI, although that would take longer, which is not ideal in a customer service role if there is a long line of clients awaiting responses. This is the same issue with windows ocr. It's even less reliable, and hasn't described anything meaningful to me in my life.

In summary: I want to be able to create and get descriptions of images on my windows machine.

Picture Smart in JAWS gives me great descriptions of text in screenshots, but of course your mileage may vary depending on the specific software the screenshots are from and what exactly you want to find out from them.

I use NVDA. However, I think I'm going to download the Jaws demo, and only run it when I need to check out screenshots.

THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION!

This may not work. The 40 minutes does not stop if you close JAWS and then open it an hour later, so you'll probably need to restart your computer for each screenshot you need to check.

You should ask your employer to pay for JAWS.

I'm not in the US where there are laws mandating employers to do that kind of stuff. But I'll reach out to my manager and hear what they say.
Thanks for the tip.

If you find a better solution than pressing ALT+prinscpn for the active window please.
Being able to annotate and redact screenshots would be very helpful to me too.

Me too. The problem with a lot of the built in ways of capturing screen shots in windows and on android phones can end up snapping a whole bunch of additional info that you had no idea was there. I never do it, makes me too nervous.
