Narration for Texting in Movies/TV (self.Blind)
submitted by Otamaboya
Perhaps this could be filed under "Wouldn't it be nice if this existed". But a thought I had that I wanted to put out in the world...

As someone with partial vision, I don't use audio description for movies/tv as it is far beyond what I need and ends up being distracting. However, I feel very left behind as a viewer when it comes to the modern development of onscreen text messages or social media content. This could also apply to scenes where a character reads some important info on a note or letter. I'm always having to ask whoever I'm watching with, "Wait, what did that say?", or pause so I can read it.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a "Read Text Aloud" feature for movies/tv?

\- UPDATE: Thought a bit more of how I would imagine this working. I assume an audio description track would include narration of onscreen text. So maybe it wouldn't be too hard to create a "Lite" version where all but the text narration is muted. Then in a menu, under audio description, the user could select "Full" or "Lite".

Omg YES! I feel the same exact way! As someone who has enough vision to see whats going on on the screen I don't need audio descriptions. I don't like asking for help with stuff either so oftentimes when there is text on the screen I try to read it myself. By the time I realize I cant and ultimately ask someone to read it aloud to me, the text is already gone.

Hi all,

I'm a Masters student at the University of Bristol, studying Anthropology with Innovation.

My team and I are currently working on a project concerning leisure experiences for the visually impaired, specifically in terms of entertainment. Hearing you guys discussing these issues you've have given us a feeling that we may be moving in the right direction.

Shoot me a message, would love to speak about this with anyone who's willing!

Cheers

Makes me wonder if there's any streaming services specifically for blind people. Could be an opportunity here for that. Probably could be marketed to sighted people for times when they don't want to be looking at a screen

Yes! I’ve been wanting this for years like audio descriptions but only for one screen text
