Hi, I’ve always been low vision and have been able to get by with a glasses and contacts combo. Recently I started seeing floaters in one eye and my Retina Specialist says there’s lattice degeneration also and will monitor closely for the next few months. He said if I get retinal detachment, it usually happens within the next couple months. He also said separation has already begun in the other eye as well. I’m having a tough time seeing and I can’t stop worrying about what is going to happen. Does anyone have some kind words or resources that might be helpful? Thanks in advance.

I don't have any resources, only kind words. I'm sorry you are dealing with this. It sounds scary and stressful. I can tell you that I know this same kind of upset. I hope it works out for you.

Thank you ❤️. I really appreciate your kind words. It is scary and stressful and I know worrying doesn’t help, but I can’t help how I feel right now.

Yeah, but it's so hard not to. I don't know you but just the way you asked your question and laid out your situation you are resilient and can work with what happens. I'm a Buddhist and one of the thing our lineage founder said was everything is workable. Doesn't mean it won't be difficult but that you can end up on the other side of that difficulty. It's the uncertainty that's the challenge. Let us know how you make out.

That’s it exactly. The uncertainty is torture. Thank you for helping me feel not so alone through this. ❤️

What country are you in? Different countries have different organizations that can work on rehabilitation skills. Getting skills earlier can be beneficial for many reasons, and it can help some people cope better if / when their vision gets worse.

Thank you for responding. That’s a good point. I should try again to get help since my vision is failing and the sooner I can learn some new skills, the better. I’ll try to apply for the services again. I’m only hurting myself if I don’t.

You can request a different instructor, although depending on the office, there may not be another one (I know for my country, we had staff shortages for a bit). And yeah, definitely better to start learning sooner, it can help. Best of luck!

I really appreciate your replies ❤️. I just submitted a new application for services and hopefully this will be a better experience. It didn’t even cross my mind to reach out to the center again. I’ve been too stressed out and emotional to think straight.

I’m in the US. I was referred to the low vision/blind center a couple years ago, but the person who was supposed to help, was not very helpful, so I didn’t bother with it again.

Why do you think it was not helpful? It seems things have progressed now so I'm wondering if their help would be more useful now.
I'd suggest searching for state or local groups that help with supporting the blind. In my state, the state commission requires their certificate of being legally blind for assistance. However, there's other local groups that help with learning to adapt to living being blind.

The person that was supposed to help would call me during the hours I worked and was never available when I called him. I told him several times the best way to reach me was through email. I always responded quickly with the information he requested and every time he’d take so long to get back to me only to say the timeframe expired and he closed out my case.

Hey, are you connected with resources within your state? I would recommend the NFB and its nearist chapter. They can provide—and help you—with things you might be struggling with at the moment with the loss of your sight.
I know it's hard for you right now, and I'm so sorry for that. Let me know if you need any help.

Thank you, this means a lot to me ❤️. I did not know about the NFB and will look into their services.
