Please, please don’t call a mobility device like a white cane a “symbol of defeat.” While different people may have different opinions on cane use, this is a symbol of independence to many. Calling a tool that can already be stigmatized something like that only reaffirms the stigma that people using it must feel defeated.

Good to know, thanks for providing a different perspective on this. The reason I wrote it that way is because many of the people we interviewed so far said that accepting the need for the white cane as their visual impairment got worse was difficult, i.e. the white cane symbolized the point where they became dependent on it.
