Has anyone used an electric wheelchair while being very visually impaired/almost completely blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by RollForParadise
I’m currently in the process of speaking with my occupational therapist and trying to make a case as to why I really want to get an electric wheelchair. I can no longer walk and I hate waiting around for someone to come and move me however she is worried about me being unable to see where I’m driving.

Are used to walk around my house without site without any issues, nothing has moved and it’s still the same house and yard. There’s also A really cool device called Lucy mobility which is a radar detective system that attaches to electric wheelchairs in order to stop collisions. It was made to help those with visual impairments or with lack of reaction time and I think this would be a game changer for me and many others!

It is just so hard to try and convince the government to pay for an electric chair while also being almost blind have you heard of anyone else who has had success with using an electric chair while being visually impaired/blind? I would love to hear stories and any advice to help my battle. I am also in Canada which makes it a little more frustrating considering most of the info on here is for the US.

My husband is pretty much total with ocular albinism and when he’s in motion his eyes do not focus. He uses his chair successfully

I read somewhere that there are cane techniques for use with an electric chair. If you could find some of them, maybe you could use that info to convince them to pay for one.

My mom did for a number of years. Her vision was worse than mine at that point. She used it around our house and yard without issue. If she was going out shopping or to some place crowded, she'd use her regular wheelchair and someone would push her.

Hey, I go to a blind school and there was a kid that went to hear who used an electric wheelchair. And like the previous commentor said, there’s tons of cane techniques you can use with an electric wheelchair. He loved it. He was able to navigate very well with it and he said it made him feel much better now that he didn’t have somebody to push him. He’s independent went through the roof. He’s even able to navigate around some public places that he knows pretty well with it. He has no site by the way.

My best friend uses a power-chair and is completely blind, no vision whatsoever. It can be done; if an electric wheelchair is what you need, keep pushing for it! Best of luck!
