Tips for how to do swimming relay starts as a legally blind swimmer. (self.Blind)
submitted by Fluid_Owl_9372
Hi guys. I need some advice on how to improve relay starts in swimming. I’m on a high school team this winter, and while I’m not new to team swimming, I’ve noticed that relays and relay starts are a point of weakness for me.
I should add that I have 20/200 vision in both eyes, so I do have the ability to see some, but that combined with very poor depth perception makes doing relay starts difficult.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Two ideas -

* Ask the coach to put you in first
* Have the coach or a team mate whistle or shout a moment before the previous swimmer touches the wall. Practice with your helper until they know exactly when to signal you to account for the processing delay you experience. That should get you diving at just the right time.

I'm a retired blind Paralympic swimmer. What stroke do you swim? Typically to make things easiest, blind swimmers try to be the anchor in a relay. If you have a specific slot you like to race in, another option is to get set up on the block and have your coach or another teammate put their hand on your shoulder. When it's time for you to dive, they can lift their hand. Those are the two methods I used while swimming. Happy to answer any other questions you may have.
