Games/activities for an elderly blind man (self.Blind)
submitted by n3sevis
Hello. My grandfather is blind, not 'completely' blind but enough so that his only activity is listening to the radio. He knows how to operate buttons and can remember where to press to change between his set channels. He's constantly bored and depressed, and I really want to find something that can make a difference, other than our daily visits and conversations. Does anyone know about any sort of mind games/activities that can make his day a little brighter? I would love to hear from you. Thanks.

It's better to make accessible what he likes to do, rather than finding games designed for people who are visually impaired but he's not interested in. For example, if he likes playing cards, there are braille cards as well as "talking" cards that tell you (via Bluetooth) what it is. Even if he doesn't know braille, it's easy enough to memorize four suits and 13 numbers/face cards.

Another good one is Trivial Pursuit, if you can find an old set from the 1980s... the questions will be right up his alley :)

Do you have a way for him to listen to old time radio shows. Sometimes the nostalgia is great for the elderly. The old commercials are a fun part of the experience.
You can find them on CD at the library, buy them from many sources online.

Gunsmoke and Hitchcock are good ones if he likes that stuff.

That's a great idea, I think he would enjoy that.

You'll have to help him but look into penfriend. Basically, you can stick small labels on things and the pen will tell the person what that thing is (you'll see what I'm saying when you look it up). That way, you can help him label a deck of cards and that can open opportunities for almost any card game out there. We've also used it to label cards on board games we enjoy.

Interesting, might be a bit too finicky for a 90 year old with slightly shaky hands though
