How do you avoid spilling drinks when filling your cup?(self.Blind)
submitted by FlyingTigerKepi
Hello vision impaired folks! Do you fill your containers by the sound of fullness? Or perhaps with tip of your finger in the cup? Do you have favourite containers that have better acoustic warnings of liquid level? (I'm certain I would, I already enjoy several glasses and other containers for this reason) Question came to me when I nearly made a mess on my counter in the dark just now. Thank you, have a great day!

I use a finger, but on glasses I'm familiar with, I can do it by sound alone.

I always stop too low when I do it by sound. Need more practice probs.
No-Satisfaction78421 points1y ago
Right? There’s a big jump in pitch from the glass being empty to the glass being about 2/3 of the way full, but then the pitch increases much more slowly so it gets tricky

I don't think I've ever done a finger, I just go by the sound. I'm always being told off for not leaving space to carry drinks around at the top but sorry, I want my moneys worth. A full glass is a good glass in my book.

I act like the queen of England and ask someone else to do it for me. That and I use allot of pre bottled options. Dude I got a freaking juice box right now as I'm typing this.
If no ones around. Carefully feel where the lip of the cup is. Hold it in a way where your thumb is near the top or preferred fill line. Carefully feel where the receptical of said drinks spout or lip is.
Line em up. Pour slowly. Cautiously. Spilling is only a minor inconvenience so dont let that stress you. Once you feel the liquid in said cup touch your thumb. Stop pouring and your good to go.
Always do a courtesy check for spillage by just napkining the area. If anyone is watching you do this and ask questions. Make them your drink bitch for the rest of said event. Out of kindness ofcorse.
The last Queen of England was $1 who, with the 1707 Acts of Union, dissolved the title of King/Queen of England.
####FAQ
*Isn't she still also the Queen of England?*
This is only as correct as calling her the Queen of London or Queen of Hull; she is the Queen of the place that these places are in, but the title doesn't exist.
*Is this bot monarchist?*
No, just pedantic.

I use a finger. But when I pour for others I have a indicator that I can hang on my cup that vibrates when it's full. Only use it for others drinks tho.

I was looking at things like that on Maxi aids the other day. I need to get one of those. Do you recommend a particular model?
Trick-Regret-4931 points1y ago
I don't remember I'll look when I get home!

Several companies sell an indicator for about $10 that squeaks or makes a chirping sound when the cup is almost full. Most people who have been blind for a while can do it just based on the sound alone. Some people who are blind stick their finger in the cup while filling. As someone who is not blind, but has been in many homes of people who are blind, I would strongly prefer that they not put their finger in *MY* drink if they are pouring for me. :-)

I've said this before but my autobiography will one day be called My Finger Was Just In Your Drink. And subtitled And Don't Ask Me About The Butt Wiping. A great combination.

This has been extremely interesting, thank you all for helping me learn a little about your lives!

As many other here, the finger works for my drinks. But self serve is nice for guests etc. But this discussion makes me wonder why a tiny spill would be any cause for embarrassment. I know for a fact that sighted people make messes too. In my household I’m the one cleaning them up so I know. And do my sighted husband let it bother him if he creates a puddle of coffee on the counter? Absolutely not. :) Just a thought. We are very often painfully self conscious about these things. I can be for sure and it almost makes me a bit sad that we spend so much energy on what people think.

Hmm, good point. The little things aren't worth worrying about!

I use either the finger test, the sound test or both. This is why I have to ask my wife to keep quiet while I’m pouring our morning coffee LOL. For obvious reasons, and especially in Covid times, I only use the finger test for my own beverages
FlyingTigerKepi [OP]2 points1y ago
Haha my mom also needs it quiet at her house in the morning... But that's only because she's not quite human before her coffee 😊 Thanks!

Most of the time I do it by the acoustics. If I have a cut that doesn’t have great acoustics, are usually use the tip of my finger.

I use a finger, usually. For hot drinks sometimes I get tired of burning my fingers and put the mug in the sink in case of overflow and try to do it based on the sound and what feels right. You do start to get a feel for it after a while.
I try to avoid pouring drinks for others, but if I have to I don't stick my finger in. I get so nervous pouring things in front of people that my hand shakes, which makes things extra difficult and messy.
vip-sizzles1 points1y ago
Sometimes sound & sometimes finger. With a glass cup, I will often lift it up to eye level to check. I make smoothies, so I pour that over the sink.

For cold drinks, I stick my finger in the cup or where the drink comes out of. For hot drinks, I have a liquid level indicator, but still struggle pouring from the kettle (mainly lining it up and knowing where the water comes out from).

I use the thumb method and as extra precaution I place a bowl underneath my cup/mug/glass to catch spills.
