Gifts for dad who is losing his vision? (self.Blind)
submitted by CompetencyOverload
My dad lives about 7hrs away, and because of COVID we aren't able to celebrate Christmas.

He's mid 60s, and losing his sight due to unmanaged diabetes. Yes, I have tried to negotiate/explain/persuade why he should take action, but he has not been willing to listen.

I would love suggestions for gifts for folks who are low-sighted. He used to be a big reader, he's conservative-ish but not nutty about it, and he enjoys fishing.

like people have mentioned is an ebook reader great. also, think about maybe a daisy-player or audiobooks. Those always make me happy to receive. otherwise, some music might make him happy too.

I’m now legally blind due to diabetes and I was always an avid reader. I still am with the vision I have left. My iPad and Audible subscription are now things I can’t imagine living without. It depends on his level of impairment but it could make a world of difference for him as well. The accessibility options on the iPad can’t be compared to anything similar imo.

Edit for grammar

It's probably bit too soon to give him gifts specifically tailored for the blind.

Maybe in projecting to much but hear me out. It's a sore spot for allot of folks who where born with sight and lose it after. Tbh, heavily push the idea of therapy.

Since he likes fishing. Get him a sick fishing rod.

An ebook reader where he can enlarge the text, and/or use text to speech, maybe? Either e-ink or tablet form. I've heard good things about Kindle's newest offerings and they're pretty user-friendly.

A fishing rod is always a good choice for a fisherman. Include a bag with the most colerful bates you can find.
