Hi all! My future MiL has stargardt and requested something for Christmas to assist her better with the stove/oven.
She lost her center vision more than 30 years ago, so it isn’t a new diagnosis. But she’d love to maneuver better in the kitchen.
Does anyone have any tips/suggestions for a gift I could get her for Christmas?

Hi friend. Check out Maxi aids. They have tons of accessible kitchen stuffs for low vision and blindness 😊

I have Stargardts as well. I have a small 6x telescope I carry on a lanyard. It takes some practice to use (focus etc.). But I find it invaluable in my day to day life.
I got mine from VA. But there are some online. If she had one it would help everything she does not just cooking. I watch sports on tv with mine.

Oh, she lives with a magnifier in her pocket! 😂 uses it for her phone, letters, etc.
She did mention a new one, so maybe I can find one with a loop for lanyard. Thanks for the idea!

Does she use bump dots for tactile reference points on the stove controls? I would think so if she’s been VI that long.
Also, I don’t know what your budget is but we recently bought a new stove that has all the controls in the front instead of the back of the stove. I can bend down and put my face real close in order to use the controls. Maybe something to consider.

Actually, I don’t think there’s anything on the stove like that currently. So great idea. Thank you!

You’re welcome. You can find bump dots pretty cheap on Amazon.

I love them.

This is what my wife uses. The other thing we've been looking at is Google Home integration so she can use voice commands to perform certain tasks in the kitchen.

I would recommend a "Cool Touch" oven guard. It clips onto the (ideally top) oven rack and is made of Kevlar/Nomex (some are silicone also), so it won't be hurt by the hot oven temperatures. It allows someone to brush up against the top rack without getting scars on their forearm (and yes, I have those scars) and gives them enough time for brain to say "ooh, hot; move away" and not "instant sizzle".
