Update - Math makes me resent sighted people (self.Blind)
submitted by Laser_Lens_4
Hi. A little while ago, I posted this: $1

First off, I want to say thanks to everybody who posted with support and suggestions. Second, I want to inform you that, not only did I make it to the end, I got an A. I'll be going on to college algebra next semester. Math has kicked my ass for the past 25 years. I also posted that thread when I was at my lowest point during the semester, so passing this class was a big moment for me. I'm taking what I've learned and the suggestions you all made in order to make my future math courses go smoother. I've learned a number of lessons from this, most important of which is that I can do and enjoy math. I never thought I'd be saying that in my life. Second is that long equations are really hard because I can't read it all at once. 40 cells sometimes isn't quite enough, but I've learned how to break them into smaller chunks. Again, thanks for the comments. All aboard the nerd train. Next stop: computer science major. I'll still keep the depressants on standby though. Math is hard, just not quite as hard as I thought.

Thanks for the update, glad you're in a better place with it.

Are you using a braille writer or refreshable braille?

A braille writer is better for keeping track of math while you are working on it.

I use a braille display. I do all my math using computer braille

As you get into the longer equations using a Brailler will be better because then you can see the problem and the bits you solve as a whole rather than having to scan through. It’s easier to keep track of and easier to solve and you are less likely to lose steps

Were there changes made to school accommodations or the tools you used that could help others?

I posted this is Best of Redditor Updates. While I’m completely enamored that you pulled this off, I’m outraged that you had to. GREAT work!

Wow, that brought on some really interesting discussion.

I just wanted to say that you’re going to be great at computer science. It’s mostly creative problem solving and you’re already excelling at that. Hard-headed stubbornness is a positive trait for coding.

Congratulations! I admire your tenacity. I was able to make it through hi school/the couple years of college I took with enough sight to do math visually with the use of a CCTV. Now as exclusively a screen reader user I don’t even know where I would start if I had to take a math class today

Congratulations on your success in this class. I wanted to chime in here as someone who would be responsible for providing this type of accommodation to a student in your position. Creating accessible math is a huge challenge. Each student comes to the subject with different skill sets, levels of technical knowledge, equipment, and understanding of math concepts. And many of us (myself included) have not had any training in creating accessible math before being asked to do so. Reading your post(s) makes me more determined to increase my own skill set so I'll be in a better position to provide this kind of support in the future. Good luck to you!
