On your Apple TV, if you're using tvOS 15 and also have an iOS device running iOS 15, you can use SharePlay to do this.

You can use the Spectrum Access app to do something similar.

Wow, awesome. Just to make sure I’m understanding, would this only apply to content actually provided by Apple TV or also using the Apple TV as a streaming device for other apps such as Netflix, Hulu etc.? Thank you

It works with Netflix and Disney+ and of course iTunes and Apple TV+. I don't know if it works with other streaming services.

This is something I really want. A while ago a guy involved with netflix audio description turned up here and I suggested it to him. It would be completely possible to do, technically. If you are not using the surround sound features on your TV they could totally have the AD come out of one of the surround sound channels and you could get it using whatever headphones you wanted. They could put this as an option in the netflix app very easily.

Considering the number of people we have come here hawking dodgy gadgets, this one technology thing they could totally do seems to be somehow non doable and that is frustrating.

Yeah, it doesn’t seem like too big an ask from a technical standpoint

See my other comment for how to do this with Netflix.

Yeah the problem is that outside the USA we do have electronics manufacturers other than Apple!

You could buy an iPod Touch or iPad.
