At what point does your visibility have to be at to be considered blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by air_child99
I am curious as to where the line is drawn for visual impairment to be considered “blind”.

For example, i am profoundly myopic and have a significant astigmatism in both eyes. Vision correction surgeries are not a viable option for me due to anatomy. Even when I’m wearing glasses or contacts with the proper prescription, everything is still fuzzy around the edges. I have a very difficult time seeing things that are pointed out to me within a couple feet. I’m blue eyed and incredibly sensitive to light, I almost cannot bear to be outside without sunglasses. My vision is still declining as I age with no end in sight. At what point am I truly considered visually impaired?

I would like to be clear that I am under the care of an amazing optometrist, so I am not seeking medical advice. I would just like to hear from the visually impaired community on how much further I have to go to consider myself such.

20 degrees or 20/200 vision is considered legally blind

Honestly I was wondering a similar thing but with low vision, I know for a fact I am not blind yet as in the instances my light sensitivity does not force my eyes closed I can still see a lot. But there are definitely areas of my vision that I have lost like a section of my lower left peripheral that is just a blind spot for me or the multiple visual disturbances like rings around light that are straight up disorienting. Ultimately I just say my vision causes issues in my ability to navigate because it does, but it would be nice to have a less wordy way to describe my struggles.
