Sight Impairment University Project (self.Blind)
submitted by CB200022
I’m undertaking an industrial design project regarding visually impaired downhill skiers.

The issue i’m looking to tackle is reducing the cognitive load/mental strain between guide and skier when instructing each-other down the slope. Whilst also making skiing accessible to more people financially.

As part of my research, from this quick questionnaire, I’d like to know if, you/anyone you know is a visually impaired;

1. How do you deal with the cognitive load of being visually impaired?

2. If you’re VI and would like to ski, whats holding you back?

3. Have you ever used haptics/vibro tactile sensors for communication?

4. As a visually impaired individual, do you use any technology/devices to help you get about your day?

5. Are there any sports you play/played as a visually impaired individual and how were these sports designed to be inclusive for you?

6. Are there any sports you play/played where its not an exclusively disabled team/sport and how were these sports designed to be equal for all participants?

Thank you for taking your time to answer these questions.

*How do you deal with the cognitive load of being visually impaired?*

By staying busy, and by replacing everything blindness has taken from me. Can't ride bikes with my wife? Get a bicycle built for two. Can't jog through the neighborhood? Jog on a treadmill.

*If you’re VI and would like to ski, whats holding you back?*

Um, living in Texas? It's pretty flat and there isn't much snow. I do water ski, but I haven't snow skied since I moved here.

*Have you ever used haptics/vibro tactile sensors for communication?*

Nope.

*As a visually impaired individual, do you use any technology/devices to help you get about your day?*

A few. I use a white cane when walking through airports. I use a bowl with an inner lip so my oatmeal doesn't end up on my lap, I zoom everything to 200% on my phone and laptop and use white text on a black background.

*Are there any sports you play/played as a visually impaired individual and how were these sports designed to be inclusive for you?*

Endurance swimming, water skiing, and although it's not technically a sport, my wife and I dance at the eighties club every weekend. Swimming in a river or lake or in the ocean doesn't require eyesight, I don't have to see to water ski as long as the boat driver can see, and we dance holding hands so I don't dance into other people on the floor.

*Are there any sports you play/played where its not an exclusively disabled team/sport and how were these sports designed to be equal for all participants?*

One of the things on my blind bucket list I still haven't done is miniature golfing. My wife will need to describe the obstacles to me and maybe tap her putter in the cup so I can hear where it is. I tried swinging at slow pitched softballs in the batting cages a month ago and went 0 for 70, but I went down swinging. If I throw a Frisbee the dogs (sometimes) bring it back so I can throw it again. I don't do any team sports but I didn't before I went blind, either.

Finally, sorry it took so long to approve this post. I spent most of the last week 2,000 miles from home at my parents' home, throwing snowballs and getting in touch with people I haven't seen in 20 years.
