Hello,
I am new to NVDA but noticed that my Braille display shows checkboxes differently than when I use Jaws. Is there a standard checkbox? It seems there should be!

I guess what's standard is the HTML implementation of checkbox. Not the jaws/nvda rendering. And it wouldn't be the first time where two major actors on a market come with two different solutions for the same purpose, because they could.

I'm sorry, I can't really help you. I don't know shit. Just, if you have 'weird' behaviours between jaws and nvda, it could come from the website which may not fit the standard for checkbox, or from jaws or nvda because they're no standard for tool rendering as far as I know. That's all I got, friend :-)
