Hey, guys! I’m looking ahead to next year’s Halloween because I’m impatient, and I was thinking about going as Matt Murdock/Daredevil (seeing as I am a ginger and he is one of the few ginger superheroes).
Murdock is blind, so I wanted to ask what you all thought before I moved forward. If I went as him for Halloween, I would use a folding cane as it is integral to who he is when not “in costume.” I know that disability and Halloween is a very difficult topic because of how costumes often portray disabilities. As a seeing person, I was wondering if that would be OK or if I should avoid the cane/going as Daredevil all together?
I have Googled this question and saw people saying not to go as someone with a disability if you are going to use them as horror or a joke. Your perspectives are very important to me, so I genuinely want to know what you think. The last thing I want to do is offend anyone.
EDIT: Thanks for all the responses! I genuinely appreciate everyone’s perspectives on this. It would feel wrong to continue with the idea without first checking in with y’all. Much appreciated ❤️

We get this sort of question pretty often and the majority view seems to be that you're fine. Personally I think anyone who has time to object needs to get a life.

I'm fully blind since birth. You have my strong blessing to dress as Daredevil for haloween, not that you should need it. Use the cane, it's part of the character. And enjoy yourself.
And, if in the world there is some blind person who would prefer you not dress up as daredevil, so what? When I was a kid I dressed up as Batman, and I did not ask permission from sighted people to do it.

Have fun being Daredevil. My only caveat is to please use a prop cane (you could make it look like the cane he carries in the comics, which is all white with a shepherd’s crook) instead of a real one. I ask this because I’ve had people at conventions assume my cane was a prop. Happily only a couple, and a simple explanation cleared it up. But I think it helps avoid things like that if, when people dress up as someone like Daredevil, the costume cane is obviously a prop.
It would be better to dress as Matt Murdoch in his role as Daredevil, rather than plainclothes Matt Murdoch because it avoids any trickiness with white canes or pretending to be blind. Please don’t pretend to be blind. You will get it wrong, and probably be offensive while doing so.
Also, fun fact: where I live, it’s illegal to impersonate a blind person by carrying a white cane. I’d hope no-one tries to get someone in legal trouble over a costume , as I think the law is meant to stop fraudsters from claiming services they’re not entitled to, but there it is.

Possibly to dodge some bullets, maybe make it look more like a prop.
To try to get the right frame of reference, as a blind person myself I’m imagining dressing up as a character who is known to use a wheelchair or some other obvious indicator of disability other than blindness, and I honestly probably wouldn’t do that, myself, but that doesn’t mean you still shouldn’t. Personally, the idea of somebody dressing up as Daredevil isn’t offensive, but I could easily see how some might feel differently. I would say use your best judgment. Your heart is obviously in the right place, and it’s cool that you’re at least checking in with some members of the community to get our thoughts.

that was my thinking. i still have some time to mull it over but the responses to this post seem promising. i just need to be careful about how i do it :)

I'm a retired attorney. I'm blind. I'm not Daredevil.
It's fine.

I think if you don't pretend you're blind it's fine. Daredevil doesn't exist, but pretending blindness is not a good idea.

I have no problem. Have fun.

Sure, why not? So I am totally blind and the only comic con I ever went to I went dressed as Daredevil. A lot of people loved it even more when I told them I was fully blind in real life. Unfortunately I never got anyone's contact information out of it but did get some cool pictures that my brother (a storm trooper) took.

Daredevil is a character—no problem dressing up with him, as far as I’m concerned! I’m a huge Marvel fan, I’d love to hear more about your costume :)
It would be weird/offensive if someone dressed up as a “generic blind person”… but who would even do that lol?
