What assistive technology do blind/visually impaired persons use aside from JAWS, NVDA, refreshable braille displays, and screen magnifiers?(self.Blind)

There are tons of things, from low to high tech, depending on the user's needs. For instance, here are random things that come to mind, each of which may or may not help a person depending on their vision and skill set. Handheld telescope/magnifier, light detector, braille watch, braille compass, braille measuring cups/spoons, slate and stylus, talking microwave, smart TV, smart speaker, color identifier, talking GPS (separate from a phone), talking book/audio player, talking audio recorder, talking battery pack, liquid level indicator, remote visual assistance app, braille labeler, smart phone, smart watch, ultrasonic obstacle detector, and the list could go on.

I will have to check some of these out! I’m especially interested in the measuring cups. I never even thought about that. I refuse to cook because of my vision.

if I refused to cook my child would go hungry. ... not saying I'm an expert chef but not seeing needn't stop one cooking. I don't use measuring cups either, although I do have a set, I'm just lazy and prefer to weigh most things.

I don't like cooking, but I can, and I'm pretty good at it. It takes practice, certainly, but it's not too hard. There are plenty of tools out there, from braille devices to app-controlled cookers. Have someone label the touch surfaces or dial positions on your oven and the like, keep your ingredients organized, and you can definitely cook.

Thank you for the suggestions! I may have to make a tiktok of me trying to cook. Lol

There are other things that are blind specific such as the Victor Stream which plays audiobooks among other things. You also have the nvision glasses by Google which allows the user to read most text handsfree even if you're totally blind. I myself use a Pixel 6 which will do all of the above plus a whole lot more. Other assistive tech might include a Google nest device, a talking watch and the list goes on. Each of these devices have their pros and cons. As an Assistive Technologist I try to give my clients as many options as possible.

Thank you for sharing. I am a low vision yser myself who is trying to find some new ways to leverage tech to become more independent. I recently discovered the be my eyes app and a headset called vision buddy which magnify screens specifically. I know there is a world of tech out there but it is so hard to find.

Some of Seeing AI's channels go online to process data, just for the sake of accuracy.

I will have to check it out! Is it available for both android and iOS?
bradley222 points1y ago
No, Seeing AI is just for IOS. There's one for android called Lookout.

Do you mind if I ask if this question is for you or someone else, or general curiosity?

I’m a low vision user who is also exploring the world of digital accessibility. I use quite a few different ones but none provide solutions for every situation.

I have a countertop grill that chimes and has a big circle that changes color to let you know how done the food is, based on what kind of food it is, the weight and thickness, and the time, obviously. It's one of those things that rarely gets mentioned, but it's definitely helpful.
