Dreaming (self.Blind)
submitted by ParksDontBsuspicious
I have Cone-Rod Dystrophy and I am slowly loosing my vision. When I dream its like I can see again. Is anyone else in a similar situation? Does this stay the same or does it also fade as vision loss progresses?

13 years since I lost most usable vision - I can see perfectly in most dreams but not all. I think it can depend on the memory or experience the dream is drawing on. Oddly, in some I know that I can’t see but can

Yeah, sounds like we are at a similar place with our vision loss, and I have surprisingly good vision in my dreams, too. Even when my dreams involve something blindness related like trying to find a bus stop, and I’m clearly using my cane, the vision is still at least as good as it was like 20 years ago. Though I’ve been exclusively a screen reader user for at least a decade now, whenever I’m reading something in a dream it’s always printed text

My eye condition is also progressive and now that I’m in my early 40s my vision is pretty severely impacted. I sometimes have dreams that are in full vivid color and stunning detail, to the point it’s alarming sometimes. This is uncommon but kind of neat when it happens. Either way, the vision I have in my dreams is definitely better than what I have in real life. In real life I can no longer see peoples faces, just a vague figure of a person, but in dreams I can still see facial features etc.

I’ve never had perfect vision and sometimes when I dream, I can see what I think is what almost perfect vision would be like. If that makes sense. I’m not sure what perfect vision does actually look like. In my dreams, sometimes I can read street signs and books and see peoples faces and stuff that baffles me. But there’s always some flaw, like it’s slightly blurry or moving constantly or very pixelated.

That’s really fascinating. It sounds like your mind is trying to simulate or piece together what normal vision might look like, but because it doesn’t know, it’s making educated guesses. I’m losing my vision gradually so my brain still knows what relatively normal vision looks like from when I was a kid.

I lost my vision very sudden. When I dream I still see how I used to.

I can see in a few dreams, nothing like a majority. Give me a nightmare any day please; when I wake up from them it's like I've lost it all over again and I often start crying. One time it happened on the second ever night I slept with my boyfriend and he was pretty alarmed.

I know how this feels. Right after I lost my vision I was also suffering from charles bonnet syndrome. I would dream in full vision, wake up and be like "Oh hell yeah I can see all these trees and lights right now!" Then it'd hit me that, nope it's 3am and I'm still blind and still hallucinating.

This is my experience and I’ve been blind almost 2 years. I can fully seeing all my dreams but in the beginning I was fully aware of my eyesight. I was super aware that I was blind but that I could see again so in my dreams I thought that I got my vision back. It was almost like it was a checkbox like if I could see then this is a dream and I was fully aware of that but I still dramp normally. I still dream normally but now I’m less and less aware that I should be blind in my dreams.

When I dream, I can usually see clearly. However, I have had a couple dreams where I could not. I never really paid attention before.

My vision loss hasn't been diagnosed yet (3 weeks until my specialist appointment). My dreams have been 20/20 all my life.
