Smart phone for blind person in his 60s?(self.Blind)
submitted by mcdfries
I'm looking for an android phone and narrowed it down to pixel or samsung. The person in getting this for is not super tech savvy, probably would be using it to handle phone calls (buttons to pick up/hang), access YouTube, WhatsApp and probably audio readers. Google does offer language support (his main language of usage is not english) for his needs and he might he more comfortable using Braille.
Went through some posts and found out I should get something with Android version 10 or above, is it so? His last phone wasn't much helpful ( Android 8.1 I think) in terms of accessibility. I do not want to spend more than necessarily for stuff he might barely use whether large memory/extra features. Which phones do you recommend within pixel or samsung for blind ageing person?

As an Assistive Technologist I suggest you get a Pixel 6. You will have the advantage of a clean Google interface. The translation features on the Pixel 6 are far superior to anything currently on offer by Samsung. TalkBack and other accessible features can be enabled right out of the box. I strongly suggest you get in touch with NFB or Lighthouse. Good luck.
Edit: I've had my Pixel 6 for almost 2 months and it operated flawlessly.
Edit 2: Another advantage over the rotten Apple is that you don't have to be a finger contortionist to operate your device.

That's what scares me about apple, needs expensive upgrading every now and then for latest upgrades. I prefer Android to apple for that reason; not to mention their expensive price tag. It seems from all the answers, pixel is a better option. I'll check out pixel.

Buy android

In my opinion no. More often than not they break/hinder a feature that's supposed to be helpful. Apple has a habit of removing a feature without a logical reason.

I run Ubuntu. An open source operating system based on Debian. For you though I would suggest Windows for several reasons. The first one is cost, the second one being versatility. If at some point you want to dip a toe in the Linux pool you can do it without harm to your system. All you can run on a Mac is well, their stuff, which is another reason I stay away from them. Another reason is that an Intel/amd system is more amenable to fixing and upgrading. Macs are not.

Check out what the Blind Shell 2 phone can do.

Where we are, it costs more than pixel 6. Is the phone worth the price tag?

The people I know have one are totally okay with it. They attempted to adapt to all kind of smart phones, but they just couldn't adapt quickly enough. Sometimes training is hard to come by.

I have experience with training a senior citizen to use a Pixel 4 (Android 10) and an earlier Android phone. If training them to use Google Assistant and/or Alexa is possible, it will make things much easier because they can use voice commands for functions.

Yeah, Google assistant seems pretty decent for them to use although with a learning curve.

I'm currently typing this more or less on an Android 12 pixel 4 and it works just fine I would most likely recommend going with pixel as it's first party versus something like Samsung where you don't necessarily know when or if OS and patches and updates are going to be pushed through because of the third party wrapper on the operating system

The Android he had would be considedered an accessible phone. The user's knowledge on accessibility was just not there, which will probably be the case for these other options. He'll need training on how to use the device.

I like my Galaxy J3 because it is low cost, and I can easily and rapidly change the whole battery rather than fumble with a charging cord. Also reliability is much greater than LG, and may be better than a certain iPhone 7 I know.
I know a guy who has something like an A5l, which he likes because the battery seems to last much longer before discharging in the first place.
