Ushers and cochlear implants (self.Blind)
submitted by Junior-Force-8245
Hi there! I’m 29 years old and recently diagnosed via genetic testing with Ushers Syndrome type 2C. I have moderate to severe hearing loss and my vision is still fine except for a bit of flashes in my peripheral that occur occasionally.

I have finally come to terms with this diagnosis- and now just want to know things for the future. One of them being will cochlear work for me if and when I need them? Will I be able to hear music, listen to audio books and use a screen reader for work/ browsing etc? Would love to learn about your experiences.

Hello :)

I have ushers aswell (type 2)
Im 30f but diagnosed with ushers when I was 24

First got hearing aids when I was a toddler and wore them until I turned 19, struggling mentally with being different and took them out, I could do this, right?
I nearly threw them in the bin at one point... Good job I kept them, I needed them when I matured enough to stop being daft!
I did look at getting the implants, but I was told my hearing wouldn't decline but my eye sight would? So never felt the need to go any further with assistance in that department.

As for technology, I have some DJ headphones, they remove all of the surrounding noise and amplify the content I'm listening to, music, podcasts or a movie. They work great with my hearing aids!

I use a lot of lamps, soft white always works for me, too bright and I can't readjust when I take my eyes off of it.
I suffer with floaters, night blindness and major focus issues!

I was always told by my consultant that only my eye sight would decline?

Good to know about the headphones! With regards to hearing - I think it’s variable what people experience but then again I haven’t spoken to many people with ushers and online info feels limited. Was only asking because i would really like to enjoy my audiobooks, podcasts, music and even be able to listen into tv shows in the future.

So what I’m hoping is that should the hearing aids no longer work - cochlear could be a good replacement if and when needed. And would it work right up till my old age?

With my understanding of the implants, I don't see why they shouldn't work in the future if you need them.

I am glad your thinking of the future now, I am currently looking into screen readers and talking maps right now... I don't need them just yet but I find it easier to get myself familiar with these systems before I am dependent on them.. maybe this is something you could be doing too?

Everyone handles things differently.

Tell me about it, it's rare and I'm the only one in my family with any kind of sight/hearing issue and the internet, as good as it may be, is very limited, wish their was more support for us or more information!

Thank you so much for your response! No harm in preparing for the future. Totally feel you - wish there was more support for ushers. Nothing to do but make the most of everyday! Wish you the best.
