Not good at this title thing new just saying hello (self.Blind)
submitted by DHamlinMusic
Just thought I would say hello I'm new to this sub just found it lost my vision coming up on 2 years ago due to brain bleed caused by a knife wound to the back left side of my head from a home invasion and overall then getting along pretty good with it weirdly enough though trying to describe my limited vision is hilariously difficult I also can't get the flares for my user profile or whatever in this sub to seem to work not sure why not sure what flare to use either if anyone's got a hint on that please let me know but again just thought I'd say hello
Also as you're probably aware I'll cannot begin to get to hang of it proper sentence and paragraph formatting or punctuation with voice to text so sorry for the wall of run-on sentence

Hello. What a journey you've been on! FYI...You have to tell the punctuation to voice to text. If you day "period" it will put that in and capitalize the beginning of the next sentence.

Thank you for that, I don't know why I never thought of trying it. Being able to insert punctuation using voice typing makes life so much clearer! I probably wasn't supposed to use an exclamation point there! But this is too much fun?

Hey, good to meet you, and sorry for what happened to you, though it sounds like you're adapting well. Looking forward to interacting with you here.

Thanks, yeah I've been adapting pretty well, the biggest problem I ran into initially was my states commission for the blind had been determined non-essential and it was difficult to get any services from them for a while. As I mentioned in the main post it is rather hilarious to try to explain just what I see because that's hard to explain. Also, as I mentioned I have not been able to get the user flare for this sub to work, any suggestions on how to go about that?

I'm a mod on here. I will take care of it for you. What do you like the flair to say?
DHamlinMusic [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Optic nerve damage probably is what it should say
Amonwilde 1 points 1y ago
I'm not really the person to ask, but I'd feel free to start and new thread about it with a more specific title, and you'll probably get some help. I've just never set mine so I haven't looked into it.

Welcome. I love to discuss my twisted crazy vision, so share anytime.

I mean I think the hardest part to explain to anyone and have them comprehend is the fact that I can sense light, I know which way light is coming from, but if I look straight at a light source I won't see it. My peripheral vision is muddy, and lacks fine detail. My Central vision is most likely almost entirely gone, there might be a small amount functioning but not enough to have any real noticeable effect. My peripheral has color, light to some extent, the brightness is muted but it's not entirely lacking the ability to see light just diminished in that effect. Also, depending on environmental conditions and things like my blood pressure, stress level, and how awake or asleep I am the overall brightness that I do get will shift noticeably, and the amount of color I perceive will also fluctuate in a similar fashion and to similar extents.

My eyes are like a moving kaleidoscope. I imagine patterns in the chaos.
DHamlinMusic [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I definitely understand that, my vision is almost constantly having a watery fluid motion to it. Additionally I have various textures and patterns that don't seem to be correlate to anything I can actually make out come and go mostly where my central vision should be, along with the occasional random little flashing spark sort of looks like a white or blueish neon light or lit up filament that will flitter in and then vanish.

Optic nerve damage seems to be pretty varied. In my case, I have what is basically a red and green line running from the top left to the bottom right. I have a small window of clear central vision in my right eye about the size of a thumb nail. The rest of my central vision is spotty or completely fuzzy like TV static. My peripherall is mostly okay in the lower left, and right quadrants, but upper left and right are basically gone which tends to mean I hit my head on shit a lot.

My vision in low light is also hot garbage because the retinal nerve fiber layers in both eyes are "shot."
