Does Audio Description Exist for Comic Books? (self.Blind)
submitted by Celamuis
Does anyone know of or use a service that reads out the dialogue for each comic panel? Something like Audible or Audio Description on Netflix or Hulu but for comic books for people who can see the pictures, but are too visually impaired to read the actual dialogue. I'm asking for my legally blind friend.

Hi all,
Born blind, and new to Reddit which I currently use on iOS. I was wondering if there was a more specific group or thread on Reddit’s iOS app accessibility. Thanks to the devs, it’s already very good, but I can see a few unlabeled buttons, so I guess things can be improved a little bit. Also just when I finished typing this text, I lost it and had to retype it again, don’t really understand why.

Happy New Year’s Eve and best wishes to all for 2022.
Cheers,
Jean-Philippe

Hi, Jean-Phillipe. The auto-moderator removed your reply because your account is so new. Your reply is now approved and can be read by others.

There are other Reddit clients that may be more accessible. Check out this post for comments on Reddit client apps:

Happy New Year! And thanks for posting here.

So although you asked about Reddit's app, I'll post a few more links on alternate Reddit clients. Maybe you'll find those more accessible.

Here's a post from three years ago about the Reddit client app called Dystopia:

I can't find the app in the App Store, so I assume it's still in beta.

It's encouraging that the Dystopia app mentioned above has its own subreddit. Here's the link to that:

Yes it is still in beta and I am afraid to say it will always be until it disappears I would like to be proven wrong. For some weird reason the dev can’t and won’t release it to the app store.

Using Reddit‘s iOS app, I don’t seem to be able to click on links within a comment. I have to copy/paste them to Safari. Is there any quicker way?
Thanks.

Just installed baconreader. It’s already much better, and links are clickable.
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
Bacon is definitely good I think dystopia is better though but you need to use test flight for it because essentially testing it out.

So a few years ago I emailed this guy because of this article https://nfb.org//sites/www.nfb.org/files/images/nfb/publications/fr/fr35/3/fr350306.htm
And coincidently ran into him a few months later when he gave a talk to the camp my son was at and he had some really cool ideas but I don’t know if they ever came to fruition.

I’m still working on comic-vook access, though it’s taking much longer than expected. Publishers are very difficult to convince about accessibility. An app like Seeing AI may be able to read speech bubbles, though I’m not sure how well it deals with different fonts or bubble shapes. Comics Empower is apparently no longer in business. I hope this helps.

Voice Dream Scanner did a good job reading word bubbles in order for me, but there is no description of the pictures.

I know that some specific web comics have transcripts even though I have no idea why they're doing that, it's not like many blind people usually read comics and it must be a horrible lot of effort to type it all up.
There's a website called "explain xkcd" for this famous web comic, and personally I like https://swordscomic.com/
Hope that helps.

I know there are quite a few on youtube where they narrate a comic using different voice actors. They don't narrate the action, so some vision is assumed (e.g. what the people are doing).

Look for "audio comics" on Youtube or "Name of Comic narration" or similar on YouTube. Here are a few I found quickly.

A couple graphic novels exist in purely auditory format on audible, but not nearly as many as I'd like, personally.
oncenightvaler 1 points 1y ago
Look up a company called Graphic Audio Productions I know they have some.
CloudsOfMagellan 1 points 1y ago
The sandman on audible is very good
WorldlyLingonberry40 1 points 1y ago
Is Sand Man a novel or the comic being described? I have some credits to use.
CloudsOfMagellan 1 points 1y ago
It's a comic turned into an audio drama
jennyquarx 1 points 1y ago
There's been an increasing amount of audio versions of comic book stories. I've seen a few on Audible.

It seems to have been taken down. I'm aware the original poster was a scanlation-er(? Is that a word), and I don't remember what the name of the software is. Sorry to be so useless.
Idk if this would be interesting to you at all, but vomics, v o m i c s (voice comics) and audio manga exist. There are several on YouTube if you want to give it a go. Either way, I do hope you find a truly accessible comic reader.

Comics Empower was something around a few years ago which did this.
reikipackaging 1 points 1y ago
I know some people use an app that will recognize and translatespeech bubbles. You might have more responses in r/manga

WHAT

What an age we live in.
reikipackaging 1 points 1y ago
I'm fully aware this exists, but I'm unfortunately unable to give sources because it only vaguely interested me a couple months ago.

I searched the post on the subreddit, I don't find it, can you please provide a link?
