Thoughts on Daredevil (self.Blind)
submitted by grackthecowbell
Hey all.
I'm a marvel fan but I've been hesitant to watch Daredevil. I know Charlie Cox is a sighted person playing a blind character. I've heard Charlie Cox went through training and research to "act blind". I've heard Cox's performance is amazing, however I've only heard this from sighted friends.
Any thoughts?

I’ve watched the first season of Daredevil, and over all, I liked it. I do need to go back and watch the rest. I’d love to read the comics, too, but that takes so much effort (I can’t read physical comics without a magnifying glass, and digital comics, while better, are still hard enough on my eyes to make a less enjoyable experience) that I’ve only read one or two.

I do remember the show doing a couple things that annoyed me, though.

1. Blind people do not get to know someone by feeling their face. Why is this a thing in so much media?

2. The TV show implies (unlike the older movie) that Matt’s powers come from the blindness enhancing his other senses. I much prefer the version where his special powers come from whatever chemicals got splashed in his eyes. The former implies that blind people all have super senses and could learn to be Daredevil if we just learned to meditate.

3. In the very first episode (I believe), a woman starts getting undressed in front of Matt because he can’t see her. This strikes as incredibly rude (it wasn’t for the purpose of sexy times, and they barely knew each other), and because the show treats it as normal and fine, implies that it’s fine to do in front of any blind person because none of us will see anything. As most blind people have some residual vision, and this person was standing right in front of Matt in the scene, many of us would see exactly what’s going on in that situation, and be made massively uncomfortable.

4. Bonus: Not an annoyance, but something funny. Matt throws away his cane ALOT. A new cane costs between $50 and $70, so seems an odd thing to casually throw away for someone who’s trying to make ends meet. At least Matt and Foggy’s law firm is. I guess it’s possible Matt has some money squirreled away for Daredeviling that he doesn’t tell Foggy about. But it doesn’t seem that way. So why is he practically throwing money away (or does he go dumpster diving for his white cane after he’s done being Daredevil? XD

On the whole, while it would have been better to hire a blind person for the role, for the most authentic representation, the guy who plays Daredevil does a fine job. My annoyances aren’t with how he plays the character.

I do like that even with his superpowers, Daredevil still has visual limitations (can’t see pictures or text, for example). The powers compensate, but don’t entirely fix his blindness. I also like that, while blind super hero is the whole concept of Daredevil, it feels like there’s more going on with his character that just I AM BLIND.

Again, my comments are limited to the first season of the show, because I haven’t watched any more, but I’d say I have a generally positive view of Daredevil.

Oh also, the audio description for the show was quite good, even if people had to badger Netflix to make it happen.

1. I find that trope SO ANNOYING

2. They use the pseudoscience chemicals in the show. IIRC the very first scene is the accident.

4. The throwing away his cane thing cracked me up.

To be fair to Netflix, they were almost done with putting out the audio description when the petition went up. It took somewhere around two weeks for the description to appear after the petition. And they rolled out descriptions for other shows at the same time. I don’t think they could’ve pulled it off that fast. I think they were supposed to roll it out all at once but something went wrong. Rather than delaying the release of the show, they proceeded thinking the mainstream audience wouldn’t notice. And somehow they did.

That makes sense, given how fast Netflix got the audio descriptions up. I think it got noticed precisely because it was a show all about a blind guy, making the lack of description for the blind a more compelling story to go viral. I don't think it would have gotten so much traction with the general public (who hardly know that audio description exists) if it had been about someone who wasn't blind.

Charlie Cox actually received a Helen Keller award for how well and respectfully he played a blind character.

I'm not blind but my mother has been my entire life and because of that Daredevil has always been my favorite super hero, way before the series or even the movie. Seeing my mom adapt to her blindness and knowing everything she's capable of, I feel DD's "powers" and abilities are very real and inspiring and the series does an amazing job of portraying it. Definitely recommend.

The cane usage is accurate and the braille usage is too and it’s refreshing.

I like him over all for positive representation, but the whole seeing in the rain bullshit is such a cop out, and they definitely do lay on the blind angle pretty thick often times, but for a sighted person it is unique so I get it.

Netflix show is epic, as is the graphic novel daredevil, man without fear, but that older movie with ben affleck is garbage. I didn't mind the guardian devil book as much, though. Was alright, despite being based on that movie. The netflix show is more true to the comic stories in the frank miller run, from what I understand from my pieced together knowledge on said comic issues from sighted friends. I wish I could read the comics, but there aren't many ways for blind people to do so without having someone read them to me, lol.
If anyone is interested in more than the show though I highly recommend daredevil the man without fear, its a graphic novel that was done in full audio as well, with somewhat crappy sound effects and voice acting, but hey it gets the job done.
Also, for people who get hung up on realism, its not supposed to be realistic, just have fun lol he's a superhero. Cane thing is amusing though I agree, probably only put it in there to add excitement when he was becoming daredevil so to speak, kind of like how peter parker would always rip his shirt off in any random location to save the day in a moments notice.

I think Daredevil is the best of the Netflix marvel shows, and if you like superhero shows, it's worth a watch. The blindness is dealt with pretty well, although it isn't really a show about a blind guy, because Daredevil's superpower is that he can basically see, and balance well, I don't really get it. But it's a good show, And Charley cox is a wonderful actor.

Do you seriously care that a person who can see is playing a person who can't?

I enjoyed the movie and the series. They were both well made. There is a Dare Devil appearance in the new Spider-man movie.
