What’s a good first job for a legally blind person?(self.Blind)
submitted by sunny1sotrue117
I’ve had some non traditional jobs like working on a farm and teaching for several years but I moved away and want to get another job. I tried to apply for work at a bookstore but couldn’t read the cash register to check people out. I’m not really sure where to look now. Any ideas?

I'm a musician and a director of a company that provides musicians. I guess what I'd suggest is not to just have people throw ideas at you, but to start from what you personally are into. You will always be better at something you have an interest in. I never thought it'd be possible to do what I do now but I pushed for it because it was fun.
So what are you interested in?

I was an aerial instructor back home but am not sure how to get into that here.
DrillInstructorJan2 points1y ago
Sorry but you're going to have to help me out, what's an aerial instructor?
sunny1sotrue117 [OP]1 points1y ago
Aerial arts like in cirque du soleil. I was a beginner class instructor so I taught people how to do the tricks and stuff like that

Okay that's what I would have guessed! I guess you can keep doing that kind of stuff yourself, right? I always really try to encourage people to maintain some fitness, it's easy to lose it.

Try getting in contact with your states Vocational Rehab center. They help you work towards getting a job but they work slow depending where you’re at. They can pay for your studies or give you assistive technology to help you do a job you are already hired for. If you’re in urgent need for a job this might not be the way to go but it’s still worth checking out for future purposes.
I would recommend finding a job that is mostly done on a computer. I interned for the HR department of a dairy company near the city. All I did was process applications and enter data into an excel file. I also interned for a small software company. I got both of these internships through voc rehab.
I’ve also helped my parents with their business. I helped them create a website and helped them setup advertisements.
You could also try looking for something that’s more hands on but not too visual. My friend works at a restaurant prepping food for the chefs. He peels shrimp, cuts vegetables, etc.
I did deliveries with my parents. They rent bounce houses and all kinds of party stuff so we do a lot of lifting. I can see enough to know where I’m going but I still ran into the occasional pole or trash can. I got a retina surgery this summer so I won’t be doing this job any time soon.
I am currently studying to become a software engineer and I’m selling shoes on the side to make some extra cash. I will be applying for a student job at the college or look for a software related internship this semester.
It’s hard to recommend a specific job because only you know what you’re comfortable and capable of doing. Also, I’m only 20 so my examples might not be the best in terms of relevancy to you depending on your age. I hope the things I mentioned at least helped you find a place to start. I wish you the best of luck on your job hunt.

I’m a dishwasher and it’s pretty easy after you build up tolerance w hot items. Pays anywhere from $15.50 to $17 an hour depending on tips that day

I work in a fitting room at a clothing store. I direct people to open rooms and I make sure the fitting rooms are clean and there were no clothes left behind. There is a go backs area that I set the unwanted clothesin the fitting room. I hang stuff on the clothing rack and I fold the jeans and set them in the bin that’s in the fitting room area. I have also folded clothes in the store to make the areas look more tidy as they can get messy due to people moving things around to check prices and sizes. Hope this helps :-)

If you can use a computer, try working for a call center.

Ah thanks!

Working with the state's vocational rehab program can be helpful. If you are set on the library job, the VR program can provide training on technology you can use to do that job. There are accessible cash registers and there are money identifiers .

Oh that’s cool, thanks

Parking cars for a living! Mahoney did it in Police Academy! But seriously start in retail. Try a local corner store. Or pizza joint.

I can’t drive
pictouguy6 points1y ago
I know you can't. I was teasing. I'm also in the 20/80 club. I can't drive either. Not legally anyway. I have done it though. I have some very brave friends

My dad let me (with supervision, of course) drive farm vehicles occasionally when I was a teenager. I couldn't do that now, but my vision was better back then. I'm always glad I got the experience of driving, but it was pretty intimidating.
sunny1sotrue117 [OP]1 points1y ago
Oh yeah me too. I think going 20 miles per hour is crazy. I’m 20/500
pictouguy2 points1y ago
Actually I'm gonna get an e bike. Then with a little computer trickery in going to increase the maximum speed to 80 km/h

Are you good at tech, maybe a beta tester sometimes people look for that or else work in a computer lab? I really liked the computer lab job. Beta testing is an odd job and only a few hours per one job so it’s a one day job type deal.
Are you good at assistive tech, teach others? Some jobs I have had but yeah.
You have to like tech though sometimes the computer lab job can get in to fixing things a bit of it work, it all depends.
