Video/Audio Tour through London (self.Blind)
submitted by HatVisible8593
Hi everyone,

First of all, happy new year! I have a question regarding an idea I had:

Basically, I live in london and was wondering if blind people around to world, who might not be able to travel, would be interested in having a “guide tour” via video? For example: Filming Big Ben and explaining what you actually see while hearing the surrounding and the bell itself etc.

Obviously I would upload that “Guide Tour” on YouTube and not charge for it or something :) (or which platform would you recommend by the way?) So I was wondering what would be the things you’d like to hear so you can actually visually imagine?

I really hope this all doesn’t sound offensive or anything but I’m just trying to do something actually useful and productive this year and thought it might be a good idea but obviously needs advice…

Thank you so much!

Do it in 6 channel surround sound! Audio geek here.

Would I need a specific mic for that or can that be done in post-production? :)

You can get surround sound microphones. Or duct tape several together.

I'm only half kidding!

UniDescription is close to what you're talking about: $1

You might try reaching out to them to see if you can contribute. I have no idea how they go about doing everything and I haven't downloaded the app yet, but AD tours are a growing phenomenon (thank jeebus).

Here's a link to a Hadley Podcast episode about them: https://hadley.edu/podcasts/hadley-presents-conversation-experts/audio-described-national-parks

Hey! Thanks for this! I had a look and see what it is but my idea was rather actually make someone feel like they’re out and having this personalised tour rather than a computer voice speaking to them what’s “on screen” - if that makes sense?

Basically a little bit like a follow-me around but talking about things visually impaired people would need to hear to visualise that wall rather taking bs like these YouTubers :)

That’s an interesting idea, I think being there would be better but this is interesting.

Selfishly, we would love a tour of Big Ben and the houses of Parliament. We were in London in 2018 when both buildings were under major construction/remodeling so we didn't get to "see" or hear or experience either one. We want to go back some day but it'll be a long time!

Also, youtube would be great! Super accessible video platform.
