Voiceover not working in iBooks? (self.Blind)
submitted by CryptographerUsed779
Anyone have the problem of voiceover suddenly not functioning in iBooks? It used to work totally normally, then I I open the book and turn the rotor, there were a bunch of options including actions, (I'm still new to voiceover so I'm kind of exploring its functions and press random things sometimes) there was an action to “activate default”, which I pressed because I wanted to find out what that meant, and suddenly voiceover just stopped recognizing the entire app as anything clickable. I tried restarting my iPad twice and closing and reopening the app. I reopened it inside the book where the rotor options were fewer, actions wasn't an option, it was just speech rate or text selection and a couple other things. It wasn't recognizing anything as clickable. Later it went back to the main library part of the iBooks app somehow and if I touched her explore the screen it's still not recognizing anything as a button, the focus indicator just goes through the time/ battery stuff at the top of the screen if I swipe left or right and isn't going to anything in the app.
Anyone know how to fix this?

Unrelated question, I can't find what the difference between magic tap and secondary activate is, if anyone could clarify?

I'd check the list of apps which use "VOiceOVer recognition," in VoiceOVer settings. I suspect that iBOoks is probably on the list.

I haven't encountered this specific issue before, at least not with iBOoks. Do you have sighted help to confirm that the display is indeed showing up as you'd expect, just for a sanity check?

Also, try closing iBOoks from the app switcher if you haven't already.

In voiceover recognition, under speech recognition, iBooks is ticked in that List (along with two other apps) if that's what you mean. I unchecked it and entered the app again a couple times after turning it on and off and the problem remains.. I also tried the same with I'm checking the iBooks app under Image recognition in the voiceover recognition settings just in case, though it didn't help, which probably makes sense. Let me know if I misunderstood what you meant about the settings though.

I am sighted, i just have a dry eye condition that makes it hard for me to look at screens, But I can see that it's in the app and the app looks normal, Just voiceover won't work. Also, when I turn the rotor in the iBooks app, sometimes it messes with it, like the rotor gets stuck on a specific rotor item and lags. sometimes the Image of the rotor, which usually shows up in the middle of the screen when you change the rotor item and shows up in every other case, just doesn't show up because of the glitch.
And yeah I tried closing the app in the app switcher, it seems to be doing nothing.
IBooks has just suddenly started messing with voiceover for some reason.
And thank you for your reply

Weird.

Yeah, you got what I meant in settings correct. I've not encountered this issue before but I would revisit settings just to confirm that it is, indeed, unchecked.

Take it one step at a time. Uncheck the option, close iBOoks from the app switcher, restart the iPad. Also restart Voiceover. I have occasionally run into this issue unrelated to screen recognition but I have no idea what causes it or how exactly I fixed it. It never persists for this long though.

I hope you can figure out a solution.

Oh great, something worked! I did what you said, And after restarting ,voiceover was turned off while I clicked the app, clicked on a book, then flipped back and forth through some pages before turning voiceover back on. Now it works for some reason, lol. That definitely was weird. Thanks very much for helping me out!

I'm glad it worked. :)

I've never used secondary activate.

Magic tap is a quick way to do things like answering and hanging up a phone call, starting and stopping music or video playback, starting and stopping dictation, etc.

Ah, thank you

Use ibooks all the time and it works fine, it may not read a few pages correctly but mostly it works like 98% of the time. I love ibooks. Just bought a bunch of books from apple.
