White cane usage (self.Blind)
submitted by tide_walker
I have some night blindness and was wondering if I could use a white cane to help with it? I'm not legally blind and don't want to cause anyone offense by using a white cane when I shouldn't be.

This all about your safety not our feelings. Use a cane. Be safe.

I am not legally blind. I have lose of peripheral vision. The vision I have left corrects to 20/20. I use a white cane.

I just had my first training session with an orientation and mobility instructor from my state’s commission for the blind and visually impaired today.

I fully agree, use any tool that keeps you safe and increases your confidence!

My advice would be to learn cane techniques from a local orientation and mobility instructor. This person will show you how to use a cane safely, encourage you, and teach you lots of great tips and tricks along the way

Best of luck!

If you think you need a cane, then use a cane.

Do you feel like you could fall over or trip or run into something and this will help keep you safe? Then you use a cane. No one here will gatekeeping canes if you are using it for your safety.

It's curious how a few in the sighted community feel those using a white cane gain some advantage but when asked what it is they are at a loss for words. I believe it has nothing to do with blindness and speaks instead to the ovet physical assertivness some use to own the sidewalk. These are the same insecure pricks that would call me out saying "Hey. You're not blind." as if it were binary. They are butt hurt that they can't play sidewalk chicken for some form of weak self validation for fear of social reticule.

I knew someone who was vision impaired not blind and they used a cane

Definitely don’t be afraid of others reactions. If it helps use it.

Are you a fake and a con and want to fool people? No? Well then you should be fine.

Go for it, it's just a stick. If it helps it helps and I don't want you falling into a bottomless pit or something because of social awkwardness.

Oh man, don't worry. If you have blindness, where you can't see enough to navigate independently, use a cane. Anyone who tells otherwise is a something something .............

Trust me, using white cane won't offend anyone unless someone is faking their blindness.

Use whatever works for you. But mirroring what has been said, get some training from a local authority or vision charity because they do need some technique to use properly.

If you can’t see well, you’re using a cane as intended, even if it’s only sometimes
