Bible Study (self.Blind)
submitted by Samanthia_Farthing
Hi everyone. I’m new to this group, but I was very excited to find this community. I’ve been trying to find apps and programs for Bible study that are accessible. I currently have an iPhone, an iPad, and a Mac that will soon need to be replaced. I am open to getting a PC if the accessibility for what I need is better. I would like to find an app/program that would allow me to use highlights, bookmarks, notes, cross references, commentaries, etc. I would also love it if it would sync across platforms at least with my iPhone in addition to whatever other device I am using it on. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I greatly appreciate any help or advice!

Have you tried bible gateway?

I have. It’s pretty accessible on the web with JAWS on the PC, but it’s not very efficient if you know what I mean. I tried the iPhone app a while ago. I don’t remember exactly which parts of it were inaccessible, but I know I decided it wasn’t usable. Thanks very much for the suggestion though.

Sure not a problem.

So I have really enjoyed the bible app that the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints has. It has tons of fount sizes and audio options. It is also available through an app and a web browser. I have found that it has the best note sync across platforms. It has some non bible books but there esey to ignore.

I'm partially sighted, so I can read large text. I use the YouVersion Bible app. It features inverted colors and I can make the text very large. It seems to sync your highlights, notes, and such if you log in via an account. Several translations are available in audio format as well. My only knock is that it doesn't seem to offer links to Strong's and resources like that. I use Blue Letter Bible for that.

Thanks so much for your reply. I guess I should have said what apps I use or have tried. I also use uversion to read because they have so many free audio Bibles. Highlighting on there isn’t great because the colors aren’t labeled in a way that VoiceOver can read and I also haven’t found a way to filter highlights by color when viewing them.
I have also used Blue Letter Bible. It is actually really accessible on the iPhone. the only things with it is that as far as I know there isn’t an app for Mac or Windows, and the website doesn’t work nearly as well. Also, I don’t think there’s a way to sync bookmarks, highlights, and notes across devices. You can do an iCloud backup and restore from that, but you would have to keep restoring over and over again on different devices to keep them synced, unless I’m missing something?

Have you tried E-Sword? It is available on Windows. I haven't used in in a while, but it had a lot of great features.

Thanks so much for your suggestion. I haven’t tried it. I don’t have a Windows PC right now, but I’ve heard it’s also available on the Mac, so I’ll check to see how accessible that version is. I know they have 2 different apps for iPhone and iPad, E-Sword LT and E-Sword HD, but you have to pay for both of those. I don’t mind paying for apps if I can use them, but I don’t like to pay for something and then find out it’s not accessible. Have you ever used either of the IOS apps? I’d like to know if they’re accessible with VoiceOver. I’ve only got light perception, so I’m using VoiceOver for everything.

I haven't tried it on iOS. I just got rid of my iPad or I would check for you. Please let us know what you find. I can read large text, but it is very tiring on my eyes. I use Talkback and Voiceover a lot myself.
