Favourite divination tools for completely blind people? (self.Blind)
submitted by 34Emma
Is anyone else here into Tarot cards and/or similar tools? I'm usually labelling my oracle cards with this tiny little manual braille writing thingy which I don't know what it's called in English. So using such cards in general is easy.
But I'm wondering how I can have a more indepth connection with a divination tool, analogous to how sighted people might get intuitive input or emotional resonance by looking at the pictures on the cards. So I'd love to hear about your experiences and ideas. And to connect with blind people interested in divination in general. Would be nice to know I'm not the only one being bothered by people automatically assuming that my blindness makes me extremely psychic. ;)

I’m not totally blind, but gifted a friend a set of Dominos and instructions on using them for divination.

Ogham sticks are also táctil in nature.

$1

Rune sets can be tactile.

Thank you for this! I'm a bit hesitant about runes because this kind of symbolism has been used a lot by right wing extremists, and I prefer more complex tools than dominos in order to e.g. go deeply into psychological issues. But I hadn't heard of Ogham sticks before, so I'm looking into that now.

I have never tried I Ching (spelling) but it might also be tactile.

The pictures on Tarot cards are often very intricate, which makes for cool art but wouldn’t translate well to a tactile medium. I wonder if someone has made a minimalist Tarot yet? The Golden Thread Tarot has a free app that seems at least somewhat accessible with VoiceOver, though no image descriptions of the cards.

Something like the futhark runes could easily be made tactile, if the set isn’t already (many runestone sets are engraved).

The I Ching method where you flip a coin several times to get your symbol would be pretty accessible, and the I Ching symbols are very simple, so would be easy to read in a tactile form. Not sure about the method where you cast yarrow sticks (whether you be able to feel the yarrow sticks, or whether touch them would knock them too much, skewing the result), because I never tried it.

I don’t believe divination has any predictive powers, just something fun to play with. Humans will find patterns in anything if given half a chance. This means just about anything can be used for divination, as long as you have a number of thing with assigned meanings or symbolism that you can pick out randomly. Dice, playing cards, &c. This means that with a bit of creativity, you could make up your own, entirely accessible, divination system, if you wanted to. Something like Tarot has the advantage that it’s got so many layers of symbolism built up from years and years that connecting dots and finding patterns is relatively easy. But it’s not inherently special.

Thanks a lot for the thoughtful answer! Yes, I'm very interested in creating and finding my own methods. For example, I work a lot with number synchronicities, and sometimes hearing completely random things in my environment (music, dialogues etc.) can give me the kind of hints I'm looking for.

what I love about Tarot, and oracle cards in general, is the level of detail and variety I can get from them. that's why I asked about how other blind people handle such tools, and I'm happy about all the different answers I got so far.

a developer released a accessible terra card app a year or two ago called tarot simple
I played with it a bit and it worked with voiceover fine.

Hi, I'm the developer you mentioned, thanks for the mention. The tarot app is still available on the App Store, and I am working on an update as well.

something I have always wanted to do is get someone to engrave a set of wooden/metal tarot cards. If done right then the engraving will be easy to see with your fingertips.

for instance the 9 of swords could have 9 swords engraved into it on one side. also with the engraving you would "see" if the card is upside down or rightside up.

Hehe I literally had the 9 of swords as my daily card today!
Yes engraved cards might be nice, especially regarding shuffling, which I always find to be a bit of a mess with such a large stack of braille labeled cards.

Wonder if you could 3D print them

Well this one-eyed witch started with runes, of course. :) I got pretty good at throwing them in the dark and knowing them by their engravings. I'm not completely blind though.

I have been wanting to try stuff out like this, but have been discouraged. SI'm naturally good at spotting synchronicities and patterns. I think people who perceive the world differently can be more psychic than others, but I believe it has more to do with us having an outlook that others just haven't explored. Also we tend to have to be more cautious going into things, and the univers will show us patterns if we listen, but sometimes we have to make an effort to break our patterns.
