What do blind eyes REALLY looks like? (self.Blind)
submitted by The_OwO_Is_Comin
I know blind eyes are usually portrayed as white, but I've heard that is actually wrong.
I have a character that is blind and I'm not sure what eyes to give them, thoughts?
tasareinspace 27 points 1y ago
So blindness is a symptom, not the illness/condition itself. In another comment you said the character was blind because they were premature, which implies a condition called retinopathy of prematurity. This is a condition that affects the retina which is INSIDE the eye so it really just looks like a normal eyeball.

However if you do want your character to have eyes that are different, look up congenital eye conditions (ones you’re born with) and see what fits what you want.

The white eyes seen in media are from cataracts, a condition that clouds the lens of the eye.

Picking a condition and doing some research on it (learning what other symptoms come with it, if people with this condition usually have SOME vision (and what that vision looks like)or just no light perception at all, what it physically looks like) will help you create a more realistic, well rounded character.

Thank you this helps a lot. I promise I will do more research on retinopathy of prematurity and other things 💖

Not just that a few other conditions can also yield this. I have peters and my eyes are white I have something rare but it makes your eyes opaque.

I've only been reading here for approximately the last 6 months but I find these regular questions from people who are creating characters for their fan fiction or something else quite bizarre.

Would you post a question asking what does an American look like?

There are so many variables and the members of this sub are not one specific thing. We are individual people Who cannot be characterized in one way.. I believe that should be respected.
tasareinspace 4 points 1y ago
I don’t think that’s fair. You see Americans everywhere without trying. I’d say that most people don’t know a blind person and don’t understand eye conditions or how any of this works.

Looking at blind characters in even popular mainstream media, I am glad that people are doing their research now.
Mamamagpie 2 points 1y ago
I’m writing a story, but as I’m giving my character my eye condition…
suitcaseismyhome 8 points 1y ago
That is a much more respectful way to put the question. I just find it slightly offensive that we are all being lumped together and identified as blind people, rather than people who have a visual impairment but are people 1st.

I look no different now than I did one year ago.

Tip from a writer: Don't describe the character's eyes at all, unless it is a necessary plot element for them to appear a certain way, or that a certain thing in particular happened to them that has only one possible appearance outcome.

The fewer details you tell about a character's physicality the more your reader can identify with the character\*.

If it **is** necessary to the plot, you will get there either by first running into the need for the symptom or for running into the need for the cause.

In other words if you decide the SYMPTOM FIRST (their eves are milky white), then backtrack and retrofit the circumstances (the cause) -- OR if you decide the CAUSE FIRST (that during childbirth his corneas were damaged due to malpractice) you can backtrack and retrofit any descriptive passages to make sure it's possible for an adult who went through that to look that way (the symptom).

Books from the Howdunit series have been helpful to me in the past, but sometimes I've had to have awkward conversations when dates found "Body Trauma" and "Deadly Doses" on my bookshelf

Body Trauma: https://www.amazon.com/Body-Trauma-Writer%C2%92s-Wounds-Injuries/dp/1933016418

\*When *Twilight* came out I heard someone refer to Bella as "Pants" because her looks were described so little in the actual text of the book that she was basically an article of clothing for the reader to wear. Take this advice with all the weight of a single grain of salt, but please note how well the *Twilight* books sold and how crazy rich the author has become. Your milage may vary. Good luck.
OldManOnFire 5 points 1y ago
Although Stephen King detests *Twilight* and is brutal in his criticism of its author, I think he would approve of the decision to not describe Bella. In King's book *On Writing* he explains his decision not to describe Carrie because everybody already knows what she looks like - we all knew a girl (or were that girl) in school who was relentlessly teased and abused by her classmates.
NeuroticNomad 3 points 1y ago
Oh man, *On Writing* is amongst my most-often re-read books. I got it hardcover on day of release, and was the first book I even got on Audible - back in the pre-iPod days of '00.

King gives lots of great writing advice, but because I've read so many essays by him and because he writes so many Afterwords in his novels for his Dear Readers that after a lifetime of reading him it's hard for me to keep straight what he said where.

I remember he says when describing a room he gives only enough detail so you get a sense of area and of feel and he will give a single object lots of detail -- like the mirror behind the bar or a particularly ornate chair.

I remember in Junior high when Pet Sematary was a hot book and no movie existed yet discovering that in our imaginations that three friends and I each had vivid ideas of what key characters looked like, yet all imagined as looking different from how each other. pictured them.

Thanks this helps a lot. 💖 The reason why I asked, is as much as I'm a writer, I am also an artist and animator. I don't want to get anything wrong. 💛
Mamamagpie 5 points 1y ago
It all depends on why some is blind. It is like asking what hair looks like, too many answers.
The_OwO_Is_Comin [OP] 1 points 1y ago
The character was born prematurely, if that helps 🤷‍♀️
Mamamagpie 2 points 1y ago
That can still be multiple causes for blindness. Not every premature baby is blind.
The_OwO_Is_Comin [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Is there something wrong with that? If not being premature, then what should i do? I don't mean to be rude
Mamamagpie 2 points 1y ago
Knowing the exact cause would help us answer the question. Premature babies can haves whole host of conditions…
The_OwO_Is_Comin [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I know, thats just the one i chose
Mamamagpie 1 points 1y ago
Mamamagpie 1 points 1y ago
So the diagnosis you picked is retinopathy of prematurity?
EyesR4Nerds 3 points 1y ago
I have a question, if you don’t mind? Why are you choosing to create a blind character? I’m all for more accurate representation in media, but the answer to this question makes a difference to me.

(Sorry for taking so long)
I am a member of the fnaf (Five nights at Freddy's) community. For those who don't know it is a horror game with robots. In the new game there is a character called Sundrop who has bells on him. It is theorised that these are to help the visually impaired.

A quote from the wiki:
*''Both personalities of the Daycare Attendant have bells on their wrists. There is a possibility this is to aid visually impaired children in locating the Daycare Attendant more easily''*

I wanted to make an oc to have him help out/play with 💖
EyesR4Nerds 2 points 1y ago
Helpful to know! With that in mind, I’d suggest spending some time imagining how this character might experience the world. For your purpose, it seems like the functional aspects could be much more important than the technical.

Just some thoughts :)
suitcaseismyhome 1 points 1y ago
Thank you for answering but I am going to say that this is why I find these questions quite as are in disturbing.

I was trying to find information about using an eye patch.
It was almost impossible because any search that I did was flooded with Japanese anime fans who think it's cool to wear an eye patch as they dress up as their favorite characters.

Please understand that it's not only annoying but also quite disturbing when one tries to find legitimately medical information and is instead flooded with information from with information from children and teenagers who think that our situation is cool. And yes I realize that you are a teenager but people may think that you are an adult or legitimate author versus a teen writing some sort of fan fiction about a robot in a video game. While I encourage your creativity and I did a lot of writing myself as a team I do think that you need to consider why so many of us are not happy with these kinds of Questions.

It's not cool it's life altering.

My eyes are blue. They don’t “look blind”, except that my right eye turns inward somewhat, and they jiggle around when I’m tired (as my nystagmus gets worse then).

I make eye contact less (well, I don’t make eye contact at all from my perspective, because I can’t see the eyes well enough). Essentially, I look at someone’s face when we’re talking and hope I’m making an approximation of eye contact. I understand this can be a little weird from the perspective of someone talking to me who isn’t used to it because my eyes aren’t acting as expected (and people get a bunch of emotional cues from what someone’s eyes are doing, how much eye contact they make, how often they look away, &c). May not be relevant to your story, as the other character is a robot, but haven’t seen this mentioned yet, as it’s another, subtler way that blind eyes can look different.

Ah, thank you 💙

People say I have nice eyes.

They look exactly the same as when I could see.
dotnoodle191984 2 points 1y ago
My son had a very low chance of having blue eyes due to DNA but has the brightest blue eyes with so much depth and they sort of sparkle. People love to comment on his eyes. Especially random people who have just found out he is blind "Oh..... but his eyes are so lovely".
Erm sorry lady that his eyes are nice 🤦🏾‍♀️

But yes his eyes stand out as they are such a beautiful bright blue.

I agree with other comments. Maybe mention eyes in passing "He stared towards the train leaving with his piercing blue eyes filling with tears." But dont go wild on describing them 😊
PrincessDie123 2 points 1y ago
Depends on what caused the blindness
The_OwO_Is_Comin [OP] 2 points 1y ago
With help from others : retinopathy of prematurity 💖
PrincessDie123 1 points 1y ago
Ah personally I’m not familiar with that one
r_1235 2 points 1y ago
Hmm, interesting!

Allot of times, eyes can look perfectly normal as well. I don't know about premature stuff, but I was born with Star Guardts, and a bit of Nystagmous. Therefore, if you look at me, you will be hard pressed to find any visual fault with my eyes. Only after closely looking, small constant motion can be observed, which is due to nystagmous.
The_OwO_Is_Comin [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Ah, thanks very much 💖
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
Yeah, my eyes are actually white, I have a rare eye disease called peter’s which is opacity in thee eyes. I actually think my eyes are suppose to be black but the opacity makes it look white.
\

But it all depends on what is causing it.
