Who here left their job to go work a job offered at a vision rehab center? (self.Blind)
submitted by blazblu82
I'm potentially on my last week of short term and my left eye isn't any better than when the hemorrhage happened in mid November. It has no reserve and photophobia dictates how well I can see. I currently work as a digital press op and the lighting environment will screw with my eye big time. If I can't handle more than 20 or 30 minutes inside a store, then working in the pressroom for 9+ hours will be torturous.

I've been in touch with a local vision rehab center. They have multiple job offerings, but haven't come out and said what they pay. I am highly concerned I'll have to take a huge pay cut to work at one of these jobs. Granted, they'll be much more accommodating than my current job and even provide transportation services. However, I'm not sure I could handle accepting a job from them and finding out they'll pay half as much per hour than what I currently make.

So, I'm reaching out to others here to find out what their experience has been working for a vision rehab center.

TIA!

I don't want to say anything bad about a former employer and I left on fairly good terms (you can message me if you want details) but yeah, I think you're right that a lot of education and nonprofit places don't pay super well (I increased my salary by 50% when I left to go work in government instead).

However, you're not going to find any place better or more accepting and accommodating than one of these places. You will learn SO MUCH and have access to experts when you have questions. I don't regret a minute I worked there (I am not blind, my son is) and I am very glad I had that opportunity.

Don't accept a job where you don't know the salary. They SHOULD tell you.

Thanks for your reply!

They may not say what the pay is until I get called in for an interview, which hasn't happened yet.

I understand there will be trade offs working for a place like that, but I don't want to be so underpaid I can't take care of myself. I got a house and bills just like most everyone else. Even then, I want a career job, not an out of high school type job and they keep tossing jobs at me such as bag folder.
