Discord on macOS Big Sur a couple of questions? (self.Blind)
submitted by soundwarrior20
Hi everyone hope you're doing well and staying safe happy New Year and hope you all enjoyed the Christmas and New Year celebrations. I'm currently using Discord on macOS Big Sur with limited success and I have a few questions.
Firstly are there specific keyboard shortcuts to take me to different areas of the app for example direct messages and my unread mentions.
Secondly is there anyway to have incoming messages read out via text to speech I don't think this functionality is available natively in Discord and the growl notification system has now been discontinued is there any way to do this?

Command I opens your unread messages, across servers and friends.

Command K opens a search field to quickly get to whatever channel or conversation you're looking for.

VO U opens the rotor, where you can get to the lists of headings and landmarks to get around within the app.

I'm using whatever's before Big Sur, Catalina? So take my experience with a grain of salt.

Command+K is basically the only way you're going to be able to get around. I also have a shortcut set to the spot above the first category so I can easily get up to the channels area. I keep all the categories closed, and only open them if I need a channel in them. Once you're on a category, you'll have to stop interacting and *then* arrow over to the channel you need. It becomes second nature after a little while.

Command+K is also how you'll get into DM's. For message readouts, I'm not sure if you have to adjust your preferences or not, but when I'm not actively in the window with the channel open that messages are coming into, I get them to read out in the background.

For example, if I'm in Server A and channel 1, if messages come in A1, they won't automatically be read out. A2, B1, C1, etc will all be read out, but if I tab from Discord to Safari, then I will get all of those notifications reading out.

There are a couple of keys that you should be friends with. Command-K is one, the other is F6. Repeatedly pressing it will move you between your list of servers, list of channels in the current server and the list of messages in the current channel. You can navigate all of these with the up and down arrows with quicknav turned off. Don’t bother using the VO keys and interacting because this approach will be much faster. If you press escape it’ll put you in the box to type in a message. There are many more keys and you can hit command-Slash for a full list, but these are the most important ones.

For TTS and notifications, you should have VoiceOver speak any notifications because it just uses the default system, but many servers are not configured to notify you about every message by default. If you VO-shift-M on a server or a channel you can customize whether you get notifications in the menu. TTS is also an option though. Press Command-comma to open the preferences, and on the notifications tab you can customize the TTS. It can either read every message or just the ones in the current channel you’re looking at. On the accessibility tab you can adjust the rate of this TTS.
