Can people who were born blind at birth see in their dreams? (self.Blind)
submitted by _zerightlane
I was in my religion class and we were talking about near death experiences from Christian point of view, they were trying to connect it to having a soul and such. One of the things they brought up was people who were born blind being able to see in their out of body near death experiences, so this got me thinking, can people who were born blind see in their dreams?

It's a very very common question here. You may want to search the first few threads please.

Very.

Thank you, and sorry for not looking for others asking the same question.

It's ok, it's clearly one of the very common things people wonder about :)

Question for you: if you speak more than one language, do you dream in one or the other? (I speak multiple fluently, and it varies)

actually, the question is just usually "can blind people see in their dreams". TO have understood the distinctions from acquired blindness later in life puts OP a cut above the rest.

I was born blind, and have only ever seen light. I can do things in my dreams as if I were sighted, but no, I can't actually see in them. My brain has never learned to interpret visual information, so this is unsurprising from a medical point of view I think.

This is fascinating.

Is that to say, for example, you'd dream of snowboarding or playing baseball or flying or SCUBA diving, but the sensations you experience are still auditory/sensational, not visual?

Do they tend to be grounded in reality, like playing sports, or fantastic, like having superpowers?

The latter, for the most part, many of my dreams see me with the ability to fly, dodge bullets and so on. Even in dreams where things are quite low-key, I seem to have an ability to read body-language or understand surroundings as though I acquired the information visually.

Sensationally I feel as if I am awake: I hear things directionally, things that would generate light come through my left eye as if in the real world, even though obviously my eye is closed.

Even though you can’t see directly behind you, are you able to see directly behind you in your dreams? I’m not being a smart ass. I think this is a good way to help conceptualize the point I’m trying to make. Put simply, you don’t know what you don’t know, and if somebody doesn’t know what experiencing vision is, their brain can’t produce that experience for them even and dreams, as wacky as dreams can get
