Audio-described movies, audio dramas, podcasts, audiobooks and possibly audio games are my suggestion

Thank you so much. Btw, where can I find audio described movies?
TwoSunsRise 7 points 1y ago
Luckily, they are everywhere! Rentals from Amazon or iTunes have it. Disney+ and Netflix are great about it. Just make sure to look for the AD symbol to know if a video has it or not. Sometimes, the symbol isn't there so I always just start the video and check the Audio menu to see if it's available.

Edit: also, I belive netflix and maybe others have a "genre" category for audio described movies. Like where you can find Romance or Horror, you can find an Audio Description section.

Also sometimes its a D with waves instead of an AD for the symbol

I think I turned it on by mistake. There's some movies on iTunes/apple that have an audio described track. I remember being so confused when someone suddenly were describing visual detail in between dialogue, and even facial expressions.

I don't remember which movies it was, but it's usually as an alternate audio track.

Most streaming services but (controversial opinion) I use AudioVault, which is just the audio track.

i use a galexy note 9 and is the best phone I have ever owned since I went blind. I highly recommend the android phones, but only the ones with a couple gigs of RAM.

Every Netflix original show made in an english speaking country has english audio-discription. I have written to them a few times to try and open this up so that every language that is offered has an audio-discription equivilent.

Prime video is the same way. Though their library of audio-discription is lacking in comparison to Netflix.

Disney+ is pretty good as well but the GUI is trash with some text reader software. For instance my playstation 4 refuses to read me anything from Disney app.

Playstations are great for the blind. They are great entertainment systems and can do most anything media you might want. If you connect it to your wifi then you can move videos from your phone to watch on tv. So your phone becomes a remote. NOTE:: this does not work for Disney.

hulu is trash for the blind say goodbye to it. Your dad will need a sighted person to help them through that app

if your dad enjoyed doing stuff with his hands I recommend somethings. Legos, sorted by color. Modeling clay. transformers or any 3-d puzzle box. a musical instrument, I play the harmonica because I am a sterotype lol. there are many things that your father can still do and many that he can relearn how to do. Honestly the relearning part is a pain in the ass and I envy no person going through it. The relearning part will go better if your there to help when they ask and there to help emotionally.

O and almost forgot two more things. Meditation is very useful to help with the relearning process and get your dad a nice hat with a brimm that goes all the way around his head. Trust me, those canes never seem to let you know about low hanging trees or stuff that juts out above ground level. My hat has saved me from many many scars. It is a useful thing.

hope this helps mate :)

Diabetic people can get blindness? I didn't know that.

Some suggestions:

Normal entertadement is not off the table. I still watch Youtube videos without any audio descriptions, just for some knowledge or fun. Some of the channels I listen to inclued: Biographics, Geographics, Kings and Generals, Yeah in to a bit of rising interest in history lately. Then, there are blind youtubers as well. I also listen to podcasts. All of this assuming your dad knows how to use a smartphone with screen reader. If not, look in to your local disability rehab organizations, they teach this kind of stuff to old people. And, young people as well.

Next, there accessible games, vertual or physical.

Audio described content is also great.

There are accessible books that he can read.

Some blind people also get in to sports, goal ball, cycling, and all, I wanted to try that for a long time, never got a chance though.

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness, if I remember right. Something about the wrong amounts of blood sugar doing bad things to your retinas, but I reeeeally don’t know the details.
TwoSunsRise 2 points 1y ago
You are correct. Diabetic people are lucky if they don’t go blind.

When he was sighted what did he like doing?
ysrhgnyrk [OP] 1 points 1y ago
He was kind of a party person who always goes out with his friend every friday night. He was also a Police so he likes firing in a shooting range. He likes to read books during leisure time. He told me he want to learn to read the way blind people do but I don't know how or where to start.
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
Is there a blind place near you blind organization or lighthouse? Maybe he can learn braille hadley also has some online videos and classes he could try but apparently they are just okay.

He can still go out and have fun. No one is saying no or stopping him either.

If he hasn’t already, I highly recommend getting him set up with vision rehabilitation services. They teach things like how to cook, do housework, and get around safely without sight. That way, he won’t have to rely on anyone else to do most daily tasks. They may also have suggestions for hobbies, or ways he can adapt his old hobbies. They can also teach him how to use a screen reader for computer or smartphone. And as others have mentioned, a smartphone is an amazing tool for independence and entertainment.

If you know what he liked to do when he was sighted, we might be able to give suggestions for adaptations or similar things to do without sight.

I echo everything that’s already been suggested. Also, if your father does get an iPhone, a great resource where you can find all kinds of apps and discussions about them is AppleVis

https://www.applevis.com/

What kind of hobbies did your dad enjoy before he lost his sight? there are so many things that you can adapt to allow blind people to do the same things they used to do, maybe just in a little bit of a different way.
Also, social interaction is a really big thing. If there are any community groups he could get involved in for his different hobbies, or if there are church groups, or something like that, I find that’s a really big help in not getting to focused on your own problems.
Please let your dad know that we wish him the very best.
