(00:00) [*The video shows a close-up shot of a person against a brick wall.*]
**Darth Blent**: Hey there, I'm Darth Blent, and WCU AKA Western Carolina University is in serious trouble! They made it to the news. [*Chuckles sarcastically.*]
(00:11)
**Darth Blent**: Um, for doing some really bad things in my opinion. Before you judge me and before you leave messages both hateful and, um, you know, positive, I ask you to watch the video through and then leave your criticism or your comments of support.
(00:29)
**Darth Blent**: My viewpoint is coming from a disabled student of Western Carolina University. I am blind. I have an eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosis. I went blind a decade ago, legally blind a decade ago and I've been in the dark for- complete dark for a few years now.
(00:46) [*He inhales sharply with his nose.*]
**Darth Blent**: So, that is the perspective of my viewpoint. Don't make any judgments on what I'm about to say. Just know that this is where it's coming from.
(00:57)
**Darth Blent**: Before we get started into why Western has made a mistake, have you guys ever heard of the story of the Sneetches from Dr. Seuss? You know, I know Dr. Seuss was like canceled and everything a couple years ago or a few years ago, but if you haven't it's going to be very important that you know that story. It's free on YouTube, just look it up, Dr. Seuss Sneetches.
(01:22)
**Darth Blent**: For those of you who don't know and want a TLDR: So there's 2 groups of Sneetches, those that have stars on their belly, and ones that don't. The ones that do have stars on their belly assume "We are better, we are superior because we have stars." Those who don't have stars are put down and held in place, right.
(01:40)
**Darth Blent**: Well, there's a guy that comes into town, to those who don't have stars on their belly and says "Hey! You can get my machine and for [*High pitched hum noise*] 3 dollars each, a dollar fifty for the first person, you can have stars put on your belly and you'll be just as good as them!"
(01:56)
**Darth Blent**: And then, th- the after they get the stars the people who have stars says "Oh no! We're clearly better than them, but we can't tell the difference! What are we gonna do?" The guy walks in and says "Excuse me, for about 10 dollars each you can get my star remover machine and we can remove your stars and you guys will be able to tell the difference of superiority again."
(02:14)
**Darth Blent**: So they went back and forth, back and forth until everyone was out of money. And then the guy laughed as he drove off with all the money from the Sneetches. And he- his last words were "Sneetches will never learn."
(02:27)
**Darth Blent**: Well then, [*Clears throat*] the Sneetches learned that they were getting screwed over by- and that everyone was equal, or was worthwhile in their own opinion.
(02:37)
**Darth Blent**: And um- [*Clears Throat*] so Western in this story would be the guy that comes in to sell you whatever it is that you want to buy. And if you think I'm wrong, Western posted a link on their Facebook page and Instagram page "[*In a mockingly high voice*] We're so supportive of everyone who loves our- [*Voice drops back to his normal register*] uh, you know our um politically correct program. Here's a T-shirt you can buy for it!*]
(03:01) [*He gasps in mock surprise.*]
**Darth Blent**: Oh, yes we need to buy this T-shirt in order to show our support for this program, whose Western is totally gonna profit from!
(03:09)
**Darth Blent**: Western has profitized politically correct behavior. They have profitized it to the 10th degree, and if you try to do anything that's politically correct, or that supports people who are disabled, or of minority status that's outside of Western's grasp, they will shut you down [*Heavy emphasis on the word "down"*]. And I have an example of that personally.
(03:21)
**Darth Blent**: As a blind student there is a device I can get. I have to pay 4 thousand dollars for it. I don't have 4 thousand dollars because I'm a blind guy! And blind people are particularly poor because no one will hire them to work.
(03:46)
**Darth Blent**: So what did I do? This device goes on to like, glasses, and it goes into my ear and what it does is it tells me, it describes everything in front of me. It'll say, I can program it to recognize people, places, things, buildings! Do you imagine how much freedom that gives a person to be walking on campus an- and just moving my head around, and it say "Mckee! Stillwell! Arts building!" and just know where at in space of where I am, or front door to the left, front door to the right, elevator to the right. Do you- can you imagine how much freedom or it- it'll say "Restrooms" or whatever. Can you even fathom how much freedom that gives a blind person?
(04:27)
**Darth Blent**: So I was like "How am I going to get the money to buy this thing?" Well, I started busking on campus. Okay, I did this all last semester. I would play music with, um, a little case open, and I made money! I did! Western, I made money on your campus! And this is where you had a problem. You don't mind me playing on campus as long as I 1. Pay for a permit to play where you tell me to play, and 2. You make it where I can't make money! I only- I can only play, I can't have anything that says you know like "Subscribe to me here on YouTube", or "Donate if you want to my CashApp", which is CashApp dot Blint by the way. Or whatever! I can't do that. Why? Because it's not using your Cat Card.
(05:18)
**Darth Blent**: And so, you shut me down. You prevented me from being able to make my own money to purchase a device that would prevent me from being as disabled and rely on people.
(05:28)
**Darth Blent**: [*Angrily*] Thank you, Western Carolina University! But go ahead, praise how politically correct you are, and how much you love fighting for the small man, as you shut a blind person down from being able to support himself. Thank you, Western Carolina University!
(05:42) [*Darth Blent gestures with his left hand, opening and closing it before giving a "thumbs up".
**Darth Blent**: [*Angrily*] One handout applaud for you, good job!
(05:46) [*Several seconds pass without any speech.*]
(05:50)
**Darth Blent**: If you couldn't tell, that was- anyways. [*Inhales and exhales sharply.*]
(05:54)
**Darth Blent**: So where do I go from here? You know, after all this happened I was called this last week, [*Emphasis on the word "week"*] like, yesterday actually, yesterday morning by the legal department at Western telling me I can't do this anymore.
(06:08)
**Darth Blent**: You know, I can play only in designated areas that they tell me, which by the way, I don't even know how to get to because they're off of my route. You know, every semester I have to learn my new route from my classes. Because I'm a blind guy. Do you not realize how much that device would help me? And how much Western is saying "No" because you're- you know the Cat Card's not involved, you ain't can't do this, You know, Western says "Oh we're all about small community. We're all about helping the local environment." Really? Then why is everything glued to a damn Cat Card?
(06:39)
**Darth Blent**: You know, if you're not using a Cat Card you can't be affiliated with Western. You know what I mean? And let me- let me put this in there as well. The meal plan! Do you know what the meal plan used to be like? You were in control of th- the- the amount of times you could go to the, you know, to the cafeteria. Those tickets of yours were actually yours. Now, they're not yours. They're Western's, because you can't give them to friends, you can't give them to family, you can't give them to other people on Western who are maybe starving because they can't afford to eat, because you're nickeling and diming for every damn thing.
(07:16)
**Darth Blent**: No, now, if that individual buys those they have to be the one to use it. You know what, that's anti-student behavior. All these anti-student behavior policies need to come to an end. If a student purchases meal plan tickets, they should be the one in charge of their tickets, not you Western, they should be! Because it- they purchased them. If they wanna say "Oh, my friend can't afford to eat for the next fucking week because they had to pay not only 500 dollars per classes, you love to say that, but then they had to pay 400 dollars per book, 700 dollars for the football team, thats- work- that's required that they don't even want to go to, 200 dollars for a parking pass, and- and- and the list goes on. And then housing on top of it, they're lying when they say "Oh it's only 500 dollars for a class, they're nickeling and diming you for every damn thing.
