I set up an older gentleman with an Echo Dot and a 3g modem with a SIM card and data plan, because 1 he didn't have home broadband, and 2 he spent a lot of time in and out of hospital. had plenty of cash, though. so we set up audible, have a 30GB data plan for a reasonable amount per month. Echo connects to the modem, so all he needs is a few power outlets. Also got him a few cool accessories: a sound asleep pillow, which you can plug into the echo, or a bluetooth headset, which he uses when undergoing some noisy treatments in hospital.

Go to settings/accessibility/voiceover and turn it on. He'd have to learn how to use it though.

www.applevis.com would be able to help there.

As for an alexa; I believe you need the app to add the device then you can leave it alone.

One more thing, turn the tripple tap, I think that's what it's called, to voiceover so that if he wants to turn it on and off he can. I think you press the lock button three times? (I have an SE2020 that has the button/senser thing,)

I'm an android user, but my sister is deaf and uses iPhone. Go into the settings, and somewhere there will be an 'accessiblity' setting. You can go through all the choices with your dad and try things out and see what he likes. Things like button press length, for one.
