Practicum teaching starts Thursday! (self.Blind)
submitted by Iamheno
I’ve been killing myself in this Masters program to become a Vision Rehabilitation Therapis. Just got word my Practicum teaching experience begins Thursday!

As a person with BVI who’s figured it out on my own, never received services until this last summer, and never been to a training center to say I have 1000 different thoughts and emotions right now is an understatement!

The biggest is excitement, the whole reason I decided to do this was to make life, and life with blindness, better for others. To give the level of services I wish I had receive.

Wish me luck!

Good luck! It can be overwhelming at first (the practicum), but take it one step at a time, and you'll get through it!

Heh, make sure to review the files of the clients, to see if they have any weaknesses you need to watch for, or bad habits (not scanning far enough, not scanning at all, etc). I usually don't call them out immediately on it, but I make a note of it and then ask them later "Did you notice you missed trailing the wall a few times? You want to be careful, because you can miss things like doors/landmarks".

when teaching stairs, always try to make sure you have a hand on the railing, and being observant if they lose their balance, so you can stabilize/catch them before they fall. I haven't had it happen so far, but it is definitely not something I want to happen. It also happens to be easier on the lower step when that happens (so ahead if they are learning to go down, and behind when they learn to go up).

Also, if you are working out in the community, be prepared for some clients who are.... eccentric is the best word I can think of.

I’m doing VRT not O&M. The scanning got me thinking of Braille first though! I might end up teaching protective travel indoors and especially as an ADL in kitchen & bath.

Oh yeah, my brain is a bit shot today (my kid decided to wake me up at 3 AM and wouldn't let me go back to bed).

Upper and lower protective techniques are always useful skills ;) Did you guys need to get the Blue Book? :P (https://www.amazon.ca/Orientation-Mobility-Techniques-Practitioner-Foundation/dp/B00E31FYPI ) That was a required text for the Independent Living Specialists as well (ILSs are the Canadian equivalent of ADLs, I believe).

How common are induction cooktops/ranges in the US? I've seen them for sale in Canada, but I've never actually had a client who had one before. I believe they are quite costly.
